Missy Accused of Poking Fun at Overweight Fans
Hip-hop star Missy Elliott has hit back at accusations from her fans she poked fun at overweight people in the video for her latest single "Pass That Dutch."
The video, which features a large woman in ill-fitting clothes whose Hummer strains to carry her big frame, has offended some of Missy's heavier fan base, who have accused the "Work It" rapper of abandoning them after her dramatic weight loss in 2002.
Elliott contests her video was simply highlighting the potential health issues connected with being overweight.
She explains in a statement, "I have always been a big girl myself. I always took pride in the fact that I never had to change my body to be considered beautiful or successful ... if those of you who are angry really loved me, you would stand behind me and support my effort to get healthy.
"I still represent for overweight adults and kids but I am now painfully and personally aware of the health issues."
Elliott explains she was diagnosed with hypertension and had become seriously ill in the past because of her weight.
She continues, "I am an only child, I am all my mother has. I love myself and I love the people I would leave behind if I don't take care of my health. Weight was my issue and I had to drop the pounds. Look at Big Pun and Luther Vandross. I don't want to end up like them."
Hmmm...I guess err'body has their own interpretations of music videos. As for me, I didn't see Missy do anything that was wrong or offensive as far as the overweight girls in the video. Besides, Missy is still a healthy size herself (I'm almost there as well...only have several more pounds to drop...Spring will be here before I know it--woo hoo!).
ANYWAY...I'm glad to see Missy still havin' love for her fans of all sizes!
