After a whole week of not being able to get in touch with Mario over the phone even though I had left him numerous voicemails since we hadn’t bumped into each other anymore at school during this past week, I found myself at home alone, as always, on a Friday night. However, I knew he must’ve been busy with rehearsals that started on this past Tuesday evening for “Carmen Jones”. I understand that this will take up a majority of his time now that he has the co-leading role, but still. And I guess it doesn’t make it any better for me when I know that the most popular and beautiful girl on campus, Kalia Turner, had aced the part of Carmen which meant she and Mario would be spending a lot of time together.
As I lay across my bed continuing to flip through my World Philosophy textbook while attempting to study, the house phone began to ring.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Pumpkin.”
“Daddy?” I asked while sitting up in the bed. It’s amazing that he can still tell the difference between my voice and Mian’s although everyone else says we sound exactly alike over the phone.
“Yeah, it’s me. I just came back home earlier this week and thought I’d surprise you and Mian. So how have my two princesses been?”
After getting over my shock of him calling, I quickly cleared my throat before speaking.
“We’re good.”
“And how’s school?”
“Couldn’t be better.”
I could tell that my short answers were beginning to make him uncomfortable as he cleared his throat which I could’ve cared less about. After all, he was the one who cheated on and then asked our mother for a divorce so to hell with him as far as I’m concerned.
“Is your sister in?”
“Yeah, but she’s busy right now,” I sighed while rolling my eyes at the wall in front of me since I heard her headboard lightly knocking against it.
“Well, if you two don’t have any plans tomorrow evening, I want to take you both out to dinner because I have some exciting news to share with you,” he beamed.
“Oh, okay. I’ll run it by her since I don’t know what her plans are right now,” I mumbled.
“Thanks, hon. Oh, and let me give you my number.”
I grabbed my pen and notebook from my nightstand to write it down. “Alright, shoot.”
As soon as he gave me his number, I quickly ended our call by telling him I had to go back to my studying.
“Damn you,” I snapped with a suck of my teeth as I placed the phone back on my nightstand.
No sooner than I did that, the sounds coming from Mian’s room began to get louder and louder. I grabbed my textbook, throwing it upside the wall as hard as I could.
“Will yall shut the fuck up?!” I then proceeded to throw myself back on my bed, grabbed a pillow and covered my head with it.
About five minutes later after settling down, Shad began to laugh.
“Damn, you think Kian’s pissed with us?” he asked while rolling off of Mian and over to his side of the bed.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure of that, but she’ll be aight,” she giggled while snuggling up next to him. “I’m thirsty. Want anything to drink?”
“Ummm…yeah, whateva you got in the fridge will be coo’ with me,” he replied with a nod of his head while sitting up on one elbow.
“Okay, I’ll be back in a minute,” she smiled while grabbing her t-shirt that was at the foot of the bed. After pulling it down over her head, she made her way down the hall to the kitchen. When she stepped inside, she saw me taking a bottle of water from the refrigerator.
“Daddy called,” I stated when she came up next to me to see what she could get her and Shad to drink.
“Oh really? Why didn’t you tell me that was him on the phone?”
“I told him you were busy at the time,” I huffed with a roll of my eyes as I poured a single packet of Crystal Light iced tea into my bottle of water before shaking it up.
“Oh,” she giggled. “Well what did he want? Is everything okay?”
I couldn’t believe that after what Daddy had done, she could still be concerned for or happy to hear from him.
“He wants us to go out to dinner with him tomorrow night because he has some excitin’ news to share with us.”
“Ooooh, I wonder what it could be?” she grinned.
“Frankly, I don’t care what it is,” I huffed as I tried to make my way past her. However, she quickly grabbed my hand to stop me.
“Why are you always so hateful when it comes to Daddy, Kian?”
“You juss don’t get it do you?!”
Meanwhile, Shad was back in her bedroom talking on his phone with a girl named LaNiyah that he had been messing around with on the side for a couple of weeks now.
“Nah, ma; I’m still at my girl’s house right now so there’s no way I can make it up to DC tonight. But I still plan to come spend the day with you tomorrow. I should be up there around noon ,” he whispered while constantly watching the door so he’d be ready to change the subject once Mian returned.
“I can’t wait to see you,” she grinned.
Back in the kitchen, Mian and I were still going at it about Daddy.
“So you’re gonna keep punishing him for the one mistake he made?” she asked me with a shrug of her shoulders after I told her the reason why I felt the way I did towards Daddy.
“Mian, that one mistake caused our family to break up!” I cried while slamming my bottle of water down on the table. “If it wasn’t for him, maybe Mommy wouldn’t have let herself go and she’d still be happy. It’s because of him that she hardly laughs or smiles anymore. He betrayed her after all she had done for him, and I can’t stand his ass for it! That’s why I refuse to let myself fall in the same boat with any of these niggas out here!”
“How do you know that it’s not you?”
I looked at Mian in surprise because she had hit below the belt with that statement.
“What the hell you mean by that?” I snapped.
“Look at how you dress and carry yourself. You walk around damn near dressed and talkin’ like a dude. So how would you expect somebody like Mario to even wanna be around you?”
“First of all, Mario has NOTHIN’ to do with what we’re talkin’ about and secondly, fuck you! Shit, don’t think juss because Shad be allllll up in your ass 24/7 that he ain’t doin’ shit on the side!” I turned and stormed out of the kitchen while heading for my room to grab my purse. Afterwards, I headed back to the living room to grab my keys and jacket.
“Wait, Kian! I didn’t mean for what I said to come out like it did!” However, by the time Mian reached me I had slammed the door shut.
When Shad heard the commotion, he quickly ended his call so he could get up to see what was wrong. Upon reaching the living room, he saw Mian sitting on the sofa with her head buried in her hands.
“Boo? What’s goin’ on?” He proceeded to sit down next to her and pull her in his arms.
“Kian and I got into an argument about our father and I said some stuff to her that I shouldn’t have said and she stormed out. I didn’t mean it though,” she sobbed as she buried her head deeper into his bare shoulder.
“It’ll be okay,” he sighed as he held her tighter.

Friday nights in downtown Baltimore were usually jumping and tonight was no exception. As I weaved in and out of the busy traffic, I decided to drop by a well-known soul food spot that stayed open 24/7 since I hadn’t ate any dinner after leaving the dance studio earlier tonight after work. Because it was after 11:00 , business was just beginning to pick up as I noticed all of the folks who were rolling up in there.
Upon walking inside, I noticed a lot of students from school that were squeezed in together in tiny booths or at tables if they weren’t scattered about at the counter. However, I felt my heart drop when I saw Mario and Kalia sitting together at a table for two over in a corner down the opposite end of the restaurant. And he had the nerve to smile at me when we made eye contact as I stood there staring at them while waiting for the hostess to show me to a table.
Within a few seconds, he was standing in front of me after excusing himself from Kalia.
“W’sup?” He had the nerve to grin while watching me.
“Nothin’ much. I would ask w’sup with you, but I see what’s up. I guess that’s why you couldn’t return any of my calls this week,” I snapped while rolling my eyes at him and folding my arms.
“Oh, nah…Kalia and I juss decided to grab a quick bite to eat after rehearsal tonight. There’s so much stuff we have to go over for the play that we thought we’d drop by here to do it while gettin’ our eat-on. That’s all. But I’m sorry I hadn’t been able to return your calls; these rehearsals along with my homework and studying have been kicking me in the ass not to mention my part-time job down at the movie theater.”
I was about to give him the benefit of the doubt until Kalia boldly came up to us while placing her hand on his arm. She proceeded to stare at me although she was asking him if everything was okay.
“Yeah, I came over to speak to a friend if you don’t mind,” he sighed while looking down at her.
“Oh, well I was just wonderin’ because there’s so much we have yet to discuss.”
“I’ll be back in a minute,” he huffed at her as he moved his arm while glancing at me once again. However, the hostess had come over by this point so I proceeded to shake my head at him before turning and walking away to go over to my booth.
“Why’d you do that for?” he snapped while glaring at Kalia as they headed back over to their table.
“What did I do?” she smirked as she took her seat once more.
“Look, let’s juss call it a night. We can go over some more of what we need to practice before the weekend is over with,” he stated as he waved over their waitress so he could take care of the check.
I sat alone in my booth watching Mario while he held the door open for Kalia as they left. Immediately afterwards, I scanned over my menu to see what I wanted to order. I decided that I’d get two fried chicken wings with mashed potatoes, string beans and a lemonade.
As I waited for my order after my waitress took it down, I sat sulking as Lionel Richie’s “I Call It Love” played on the nearby jukebox. By the time the song reached the second verse, I decided to go over to the jukebox to make the next selection. I slowly ran my finger up and down the smooth glass surface of the lit-up display while trying to find something good to listen to when I settled on Mary J. Blige’s “Enough Cryin’”. As soon as I turned around, I was standing face-to-face with someone from my past.
“Thugsy?” I squinted my eyes to make sure I was looking at the right person.
“Yup, I thought that was you standin’ up here lookin’ all good,” he slyly grinned before biting his bottom lip while rubbing his hands together. “So do I get a hug or what?”
“Yeah, ummm…sure,” I nervously chuckled as he and I embraced each other. It felt so good and comfortable being back in his arms after all this time that it scared me. I quickly backed away. I couldn’t believe it though…my first love, kiss, and EVERYTHING else, Howard bka Thugsy, was standing right here before me. I remember when I met him for the first time at a friend’s party back when I was 16 and he was 21. I thought he was the finest thing I had ever laid my eyes on.
I gave him a puzzled look before I spoke. “What are you doin’ here? I thought you moved back to St. Louis?”
“I did for a lil’ while, but then I headed up to New York with some of my boys in tow so we could open up shop after we met up with this guy named Juelz. He has all the major connections up there. We came down here this weekend to make a couple of pick-ups before we head back though,” he replied with a nod of his head over in their direction as they sat at a table getting their grub-on.
“So you’re still doin’ that shit huh?” I huffed with a shake of my head. I turned and walked away with him following me back over to my booth. As soon as we were seated across from each other, he began to explain himself.
“It’s only for a lil’ while longer though since I’m tryna get my music thang off the ground. Damn, you still look good,” he grinned while leaning forward and taking my hands in his.
“Thanks,” I blushed while lowering my eyes.
“So I don’t see no man around. Could that be good news for me?” He proceeded to wink at me while grinning.
“Man, please,” I smirked with a roll of my eyes. “You KNOW that we can’t go back to what we had; especially since you still doin’ THAT shit. That’s why my folks had a fit and made me break up with you when they found out I was with you back then.”
“That was the old Thugsy though; I’m a new and improved Thugsy that’s gettin’ his shit togetha once and for all.”
“Yeah, okay…whateva,” I sighed as I slowly slid my hands out of his. “So what else you been up to besides that?”
“I got a couple of kids now but of course it didn’t work out with their moms,” he nonchalantly stated as he sat back in his seat with a small smile.
“A couple of kids AND baby’s mommas?” I asked with raised eyebrows. All I could do was shake my head before taking a big sip of my lemonade.
“Yeah, I mean I do all I can for my kids, but that’s only when their mommas let me see ‘em, but I ain’t sweatin’ it. So what’s been goin’ on with you? You became that big dance star yet?”
“No,” I chuckled while stirring my straw around in my lemonade. “But Mian and I are in our last year at Morgan. She’s studyin’ to become a teacher and of course I’m studyin’ dance.”
“You have always had some killer moves,” he slyly grinned while slowly nodding his head.
“Whateva,” I replied with a suck of my teeth. Just then my waitress brought over my plate of food and set it down in front of me. I smiled and told her thanks. As she was about to walk away, Thugsy stopped her long enough to pay for my meal and also took care of my tip even though I repeatedly told him he didn’t have to.
“I don’t mind especially when it comes to my girl,” he smiled after waiting for me to say my grace before I began to eat.
“Thugsy, I am NOT your girl anymore,” I replied with a mouthful of food as I shook my head.
“You’ll always be my girl and deep in your heart you know it too,” he winked.
“Yeah, right.”
“I mean it. Even after all of this time of us bein’ apart, I never stopped thinkin’ about you.”
“Oh shit…here we go.”
“Look, I know I do a lotta shit that’s not right, but believe me when I say I still love you.”
I nearly choked on my chicken wing when he said this. I immediately alternated between coughing and gulping on my lemonade. He quickly jumped up and sat next to me while grabbing my arm and gently patting me in the back.
“You aight, Kian?!”
Instead of answering him right away after settling down, I began to laugh hysterically. The whole time I did this, he watched me with a blank look.
“Okay, so what the fuck is so funny?”
“I can’t believe that you actually said that! Is that how you got your baby’s mommas to fall for your shit too?”
“Aight, I see you got jokes,” he huffed with a nod of his head. “Let’s see how funny you find this.” Without warning, he leaned over and kissed me deeply for a good 5 seconds not even caring that there were people all around us. When he finally broke the kiss, I sat there dumbfounded as he stood up to leave my booth.
“If you wanna hang out before I leave to go back home, say so now,” he smirked while looking down at me.
I folded my lips in together before speaking. “Okay, ummmmmmm…I’m not hungry anymore so since I’m about to be out, lemme get your number real quick.”
“Aight, coo’,” he grinned as I stood up next to him while pulling my phone from the clip on my purse as he pulled his from his belt clip. After we exchanged numbers, we gave each other a goodbye hug.
Walking over to my ride, I felt a warm feeling going all through my body. I still couldn’t believe that after five years, fate had brought Thugsy back my way.
