Barbie and Ken Split

Legendary children's toys Barbie and Ken are being split up by makers Mattel - in a bid to change the blonde bombshell's image.

According to Mattel's vice-president Russell Arons, the duo - who have been together since "meeting on the set of a TV commercial" in 1961 - will "remain friends."

Arons adds, "Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end. They feel it's time to spend some quality time - apart."

Mattel's new concern is marketing Cali Barbie - a single Californian with a deep tan - whose new love interest is Blaine a Australian boogie-boarder.

As for Ken, he's "heading for other waves," according to Arons.
