“Hey, yall…is it juss me or has every one of these amateurs been TIRED right about now?”, I grumbled as we watched the first six of ten contestants of the “Open Mic” night competition.
“Nah, it’s not juss you. I’ono why these folks’ mommas lied to them and said they had talent.”, Tiondra smirked.
“The only one that was half-way decent was that poet guy.”, Michelle chuckled.
“Girl, Tommy ‘Ain’t-Got-No-Job’ Strong did a betta job with that poem he did for Pam on ‘Martin’ that time when he kept sayin’ ‘And still I rise’!”, I laughed with a roll of my eyes.
“Riiiiiiiiight!”, the girls laughed along with me.
“Man, I’m sayin’, if this is what is supposedly the wonderful job of an A&R Rep then I see I won’t be doin’ this for long; it’s too frustratin’ for a sista.”, I huffed with a shake of my head.
“I know your behind ain’t givin’ up already?! Don’t make me call Ma and Daddy on you!”, Michelle snapped.
“I’m grown, shoo’!”, I smirked. “Anyway, there’s still four more contestants to go so maybe someone with some REAL talent is bound to come out here.”
“Yeah, that’s the spirit!”, Shelina grinned. At that very moment, the next contestant to come out on stage was a very lame comedian that did anything but made me laugh.
“Mannnnnn, this foo’ here. I’ll be back as soon as I’m done in the toilet.”, I huffed while standing to my feet. “I think it’s safe to say that I won’t find anybody tonight that will be worth takin’ an interest in. I’ll be back in a lil’ bit.”
“Okay, crazy.”, Michelle chuckled.
About fifteen minutes later as I was returning to my seat, the emcee walked out on stage to announce the entrance of last week’s winner onto the stage. But things had been so bad tonight that you could only hear an echo of applause throughout the room.
“You mean the torture’s not ova yet?”, I asked as I took my seat.
“Nope…I…damn!”, Michelle whispered as the last contestant walked out on stage.
“Da hell…?”, I whispered back when we all took a good look at baby boy that strolled out onto the stage.
“Yall sure did change your tune quick.”, Tiondra giggled.
“Baby Chris got it goin’ on. Lawd knows I hope he’s good.”, I sighed while pretty much gazing at him.
“Baby Chris?”, Shelina asked with a puzzled look.
“Yeah, doesn’t he favor Chris Rock to yall or is it juss me?”, I chuckled.
“Now how you gon’ say that boy look like some damned Pookie?!”, Tiondra quietly laughed.
“Nah, I’m talkin’ about the new and IMPROVED Pookie, smart ass.”, I laughed back.
“See?! Will yall hush?! I didn’t even get to hear what the man’s name is!”, Michelle huffed as she frantically waved her hand as a signal for us to shut up.
“What you care for anyway? One you’re a married woman now and two, although Baby Chris is fine as hell, he looks a lil’ too young.”, I replied with a suck of my teeth.
“He can’t be all that young if he’s in here so shut it!”, she snapped at me.
“Anyway.”
Just then, the nameless amateur flashed a sexy and devilish grin as the intro music to what he said was an original piece of his began to play. From the second the first note spilled forth from his lips, I was amazed not only by his powerful singing voice, but also what he was singing about. Maybe Michelle was right…he couldn’t be all that young because he was singing about how his girl stepped out on him as well as singing about some damn ghetto Karma Sutra?! Nah, this boy had to be older than what he appeared to be. Something’s telling me that I am about to successfully complete my first job assignment as an A&R Rep!
By the time he was done, he was receiving much love from the crowd. Then he did it, before exiting the stage…he flashed that sexy and devilish grin while waving goodbye to the crowd.
“Let’s give it up one more time for Mario!”, the emcee cheered as more thunderous applause filled the room before he called all of the contestants back out on stage one-by-one. However, it was obvious who the winner was when this Mario guy was the last one to walk back on stage.
While he made a quick acceptance speech for his second-week win, I was fishing around in my purse for one of my cards so that I could somehow convince him to come down to the label to audition for us and possibly be the next big star signed to K Records.
Once everything was finished as far as the competition was concerned, the DJ went back to playing music. I was about to make my way over to my possible new client when they Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait” started to bump. Well yeah, I know I’m supposed to be about business at the moment, but since baby boy was surrounded by a bunch of females anyway, I decided that I’d wait to approach him after my jam was over. I was constantly changing dance partners while getting my groove on when, wouldn’t you know it, the very one I was gonna step to just happened to come up behind me to get his groove on as well.
“Hi!!!”, I shouted over the loud music. “I was about to come over to you in a minute to congratulate you! You were great!”
“Thanks!”, he proudly grinned.
“Say listen, could I talk to you about somethin’ for a minute?!”
“Yeah, sure!” We proceeded to walk out near the lobby where things weren’t as loud.
“My name is Glow Whitaker and I’m a rep from K Records and I would love to set you up for an audition with us.”, I smiled as I shook his hand before handing him my card.
“For real?! Are you kiddin’ me?! I’ve sent two demos there within the past year, but hadn’t heard from anybody!”, he bellowed while reading over my card.
“Well, that’s where I step in.”, I chuckled. “By the way, if you don’t mind my askin’, how old are you?”
“I’m 19.”, he replied with a puzzled look.
“Damn…too bad!”, I wearily thought to myself before speaking up. “I have to ask because if you were under 18, then we’d have to have your parent or guardian’s consent before I could set up an audition for you. Plus you could‘ve lied about your age in order to get in here.”, I joked while throwing him a wink.
“Nah, ma, neva that.”, he smiled with a shake of his head. “So when would be a good time for me to get into contact with you?”
“Ummmm…how about you drop by the office on Tuesday mornin’ around 10:00?”
“Okay, I won’t have my next class until 1:00 on that day anyway so this will work out fine!”
“Aight, well I’ll see you then, Mario.”, I smiled as the two of us shook hands once more.
As I walked away, I couldn’t help from being a lil’ disappointed that babyboy was only 19!!! Man, life sucks sometimes.
“Nah, it’s not juss you. I’ono why these folks’ mommas lied to them and said they had talent.”, Tiondra smirked.
