Upon arriving at the reception, I told Millie about everything that had went on back at the church as well as telling him I knew this Yelina chick from somewhere, but as of now, I couldn‘t remember exactly where I had seen her. While I was expecting him to cuss me out, I was surprised by his sensitivity to my situation.
"Babygirl, look...I can't begin to imagine how you're feelin', but truss me when I say that it is NICK's loss; not yours. And who knows...with all those fine-lookin' menses that were at the weddin' and comin' here, you're bound to luck up with one.", he chuckled while giving me a reassuring hug as we stood out in the parking lot.
"Thanks, Millie. You my rock, girlfriend!", I joked as I placed a kiss on his cheek.
"Whateva, skank.", he joked back as he took my hand to walk me over to the rest of the wedding party so we could make my entrance into the ballroom of the Four Seasons hotel along with everyone.
Once we were inside and seated, the pastor stood up to say grace before we proceeded with eating. Since I wasn't really hungry at the moment, I told momma and daddy to stay put and I would fix their plates for them. As I stood in line, I looked around the room at everyone and noticed that Nick had made his way over to ma and daddy's table to speak with them and I guess introduce them to Yelina since she was with him. I guess I must've been staring too long because I felt someone playfully tap my bare shoulder. When I glanced behind me, I saw it was my and Dashara's cousin, Shondrella.
"Heffa, move it along! We hungry!", she joked while laughing at me.
"I got your heffa, turkey!", I laughed as I quickly moved up in the line.
"So now that it's one down and two to go, should we put our bets in on who'll be next to walk down the aisle?” , she chuckled.
"Girl, with the way my luck has been lately, I think it's safe to place a bet on you since you and Marques been togetha for some time now.", I giggled.
"Please! He still got cold feet talkin' some mess about it's goin' so good between us right now, why mess it up with a marriage certificate."
"No he didn't?!", I laughed while looking up with widened eyes as I proceeded to place some food on ma and daddy's plates.
"Yes he did, but I told him that if I don't get a ring by this time next year, then I'm movin' on. It's not like I'm gettin' any younger.", she chuckled.
"Ain't THAT the truth!", I joked while throwing a wink at her.
"Zip it!", she laughed.
"Anyway. I noticed he couldn't make it."
"Yeah, he's back home workin' on some musical projects for him and his boys so he was unable to fly here to attend the weddin', but he told me to send his well-wishes to D and Rell.", she smiled.
"Awwww...that's sweet."
When I was finished fixing ma and daddy's plates, I made my way back over to them even though Nick and Yelina were still standing there.
"Here you go.", I faintly smiled as I sat their plates down in front of them.
"Oh, thanks, hon.", momma smiled.
"You're not gonna eat anything?", Nick smiled while looking at me as I took my seat next to daddy.
::Thinkin':: Negro, please! Don't EVEN try that act-like-you-carin' shit! Just go on and choke on that biscuit already!
"No. I'm not hungry.", I replied in a forced pleasant tone before standing back up to go see what Dashara and Terrell were up to.
"Mary! You see what you did?!", daddy whispered to momma as soon as Nick and Yelina excused themselves to go back to their table.
"Well how was I supposed to know that he wasn't coming back empty-handed?!", she whispered back.
"I told you to leave well enough alone, but nooooo!"
"Oh hush up ol' man and eat your food!"
In the meantime, I stood in between Terrell and Dashara as they sat at their table eating. "Congratulations again, you two! Welcome to the family!", I grinned as I placed a kiss on Terrell's cheek followed by Dashara's while placing my hands on their shoulders.
"Thanks.", he grinned while winking at Dashara.
"Where's your plate? I know you haven't ate already?", Dashara smiled as she looked up at me.
"Oh, maybe I'll get a lil' somethin' lata.", I sighed with a shrug of my shoulders. "But can I get yall anything?"
"Nah, sis, we're straight; but thanks.", Terrell replied.
"Okay, well I'll be nearby if yall need me for anything. I'll see ya in a lil' bit."
"Hey, is Cherish okay?", Terrell whispered while glancing over at Dashara.
"No, I don't think so.", she mumbled with a shake of her head while keeping her eye on me as I made my way over to some of our other family members and friends that I hadn't seen in a while.
"Maybe I need to go see what's wrong." However, just as she was about to stand up, she noticed that I had took a seat at a table with two of our great-aunts. When she saw that I was laughing and talking a mile a minute from where she was sitting, she decided to leave things alone for the moment.
Close to an hour later after Terrell and Dashara danced the first dance to Jodeci's "Luv U 4 Life", everyone else began to pour on the dance floor to dance as well. However, I leaned up against a wall in the back while keeping a close eye on Nick and Yelina as they swayed to Teena Marie and Gerald LeVert's "A Rose By Any Other Name" as I ate a small plate of sliced fruit.
"W'sup?", Howard asked after walking up next to me.
"Oh, hey.", I faintly smiled while looking over at him before placing a strawberry in my mouth.
"I see ol' boy's back in town.", he smirked while looking at Nick since he had saw me staring at him as he made his way over to me.
"Yeah, anyway...", I replied with a shrug of my shoulders as I looked down at my plate to pick up a slice of honeydew melon next to place in my mouth.
"Yeah, so do you feel like dancin'?"
"No thanks. But you can keep me company if you want.", I smiled while cutting my eyes at him.
"Oh, aight. So could I get you somethin' else to drink?", he asked after noticing that my cup was nearly empty.
"Would you?", I cooed as I looked into his slanted eyes.
"Sure, ma. I'll be back in a minute."
"Thanks." As soon as he walked away, I looked back over at Nick and saw him looking at me although he never missed a beat as he and his girl continued to sway to the music. I proceeded to look over in another direction of the room even though I could feel my heart slowly breaking on the inside.
"Here you go.", Howard smiled as he stood in front of me several seconds later with a fresh glass of punch.
"Thank you, sir.", I lightly chuckled as I took it from him.
"There's no need to stress ova that.", he sighed when he caught me watching Nick again.
"Huh? Oh, I'm not.", I blushed while lowering my eyes back down to my plate.
"You're a terrible liar, Cherish.", he chuckled before giving me a serious look.
"I am not.", I playfully pouted while looking up at him. "What?"
"I'm tryna figure out why you won’t give me a chance?", he slyly grinned.
"Boy, please! We've been friends long enough for me to know that your butt is always playin' some female.", I laughed with a roll of my eyes.
"Maybe because I hadn't found the right one until now.", he almost whispered as he moved in closer to me.
For a brief moment, we both gazed at each other as Gerald and Teena sang their hearts out over the speakers. Then like clockwork, I was saved by the sound of Shondrella's loud mouth as she approached us.
"W'sup, cuz! I juss got word that the bouquet and garter is gonna be tossed in a minute! C'mon and let's make our way over to the front so we'll have a good chance of catchin' it!", she giggled while pulling me away from Howard. I gave him a look that said "sorry" as I was pulled out onto the dancefloor. In response, he laughed and shook his head at us before walking over to some of his boys.
"Okay ladies! It's about that time!", the DJ announced over the microphone after the song was over. "There's gonna be a tossin' of the bouqet!"
I noticed how Yelina quickly joined me and some of my other family members at the front of the crowd. I did everything in my power to block her before Dashara even prepared to throw the bouqet, but this chick kept right on playfully jumping out in front of me. When I placed my hands on my hips while glaring at her, Shondrella began to laugh.
"Relax, relate, and release, girl!", she whispered while pulling me nearer to her.
"I'm tryin'...I'm really tryin' to!", I whispered back although I began to laugh as well.
Several seconds later, the DJ counted down to 1 from 5 as Dashara turned her back to us. After reaching number 1, she tossed the bouquet behind her. I found myself jumping up in the air to catch it; however, you wouldn't believe who caught it...yeah, that damn Yelina!!!
For a moment, I stood staring at her in disbelief as everyone began to applaud and cheer while she wore a big ass grin on her face. Then without thinking, I was about to step to her when Dashara ran over to me and placed her arm around my shoulder.
"It's only a bouquet, sis.", she whispered while trying not to laugh as she walked me away in an opposite direction. However, I glanced over my shoulder and saw Yelina almost skipping her happy ass over to Nick while waving the bouquet in the air. They proceeded to wrap their arms around each other while she stood on her tip-toes in her stiletto heels to place a quick peck on his lips. Well that did it! I looked from them back to Dashara and everyone else standing around while they guys gathered together to have their turn to catch the garter that Terrell was gonna toss as soon as Dashara went back over to him to sit down in the chair he pulled out into the middle of the floor, so he could take it off. I took off running out of the room into the hall to have a spoiled-brat moment. I flopped down on an empty bench down the far end of the hall away from everything.
I had been sitting alone for maybe five minutes or so sort of turned to the wall next to me while resting my elbow on the armrest when a very familiar male voice spoke while standing in front of me.
"We need to talk for a minute.", Nick sighed as he looked down at me. I slowly looked up and saw him holding a single white rose he took from one of the flower arrangements back in the ballroom. Nevertheless, I gave him an evil look without saying a word.
::Thinkin':: Fuck a damn talk! I'm ready to beat your natural-born black ass!
"Talk? Talk about what?", I calmly asked with a shrug of my shoulders before turning back to the wall once more.
"Well for starters, I know this can‘t replace the bouquet you didn‘t catch, but maybe this‘ll make you feel better.", he stated as he took a seat next to me while placing his arm across the top of the bench although he kept some safe space in between us as he turned to look at me while holding the rose out for me to take.
“Thank you.”, I mumbled. He‘s really making it hard for me to be pissed off with him by being this thoughtful in spite of the awkward situation we‘ve been placed in from the time we met back at the church earlier today.
"Listen, Cherish...I was away from you for a whole year and I didn't know that I would actually come back here to stay; but at the same time, I had to go on with my life since I thought we made a mutual agreement to cut all ties with our relationship."
"Well what else was I supposed to do when you said you weren't comin' back?", I quietly sighed while fighting back tears thanks to my stubborn ways.
"I know, and I'm sorry...", he started until I interrupted him.
"Yeah, so am I.", I wearily sighed as I stood up to walk away leaving him sitting alone to watch me leave.
::Thinkin':: Why is it so hard for me to let you go?
For the rest of the evening, I succeeded in keeping my distance from Nick even though every now and then I would catch him watching me when Yelina wasn't paying any attention.
