January 2003
Nokio was headed to Woody’s penthouse when he saw a group of attractive women walking past him. They weren’t paying any attention to him, but he was doing the exact opposite. As he was walking backwards checking them out, he bumped into a marble column that he hadn’t seen behind him. “Sh!t!” They turned around and started laughing when they saw what had happened. “Oh that’s funny, huh?”, he said with an embarrassed laugh. They just laughed harder as they walked into the elevator. “Whateva, man”, he mumbled as he headed in the direction of Woody’s place.
“Man, we need to find a hangout that’s real mellow. I ain’t for all the bullsh!t tonight.”, Nokio huffed as he strolled into his home and flopped down on the sofa.
“Yeah, man I’m feelin’ ya.”, Woody responded, closing the door. “Hold on a sec.” Woody half-ran over to the phone to answer it. “Hello?”
“Yo, whaddup man! Have you and Noke figured out where we’re all gonna kick it at tonight?”, Scola asked impatiently.
“That’s what we were discussin’ when you called.”, Woody answered. “Do you have any suggestions on where we should go?”
“Well, what about that new spot called ‘The Comfort Zone’ that just opened up recently? Jazz was tellin’ me about it the otha’ day. He said it’s like a 25 and ova’ type of crowd with a laid back vibe.”
With excitement in his voice, Woody said, “Oh no doubt. I’m down with that and I’m sure Noke will be too.”
“Aight then, I’ll be ova’ in a few to pick you and Noke up. I’ll call Jazz and Sisqo and let them know to meet us ova’ there.”
“Aight then. I’ll see ya in a few.”
“Aight.”
Woody hung up the phone and told Nokio what the plans would be for the evening. And like Woody predicted, he was all for it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“W’sup!”, Jazz greeted when he answered his phone from the passenger side of Sisqo’s ride.
“W’sup man. I just talked with Wood and we decided that we’re all gonna meet ova’ at ‘The Comfort Zone’ to kick it for tonight”, Scola informed him.
“Oh that’s cool. Sisqo and I were drivin’ around tryna find a spot. We were gonna call one of yall to pass the word once we found somewhere. Hold on.”
Jazz took the phone away from his ear and told Sisqo about the plans that were made for the evening.
Sisqo proceeded to jump around in the driver’s seat and shout loud enough for Scola to hear, “Oh hell yeah! We’ll definitely be there!”
Jazz laughed and put the phone back to his ear and said, “Well, I guess you pretty much know what his answer is.”
Scola laughed back and said, “Yeah, I heard that crazy fool loud and clear. Well, we’ll meet yall there in a few. I’m on my way out the door right now to pick up Noke and Wood. See ya!”
“Aight man.”, Jazz responded.
“Man, I heard the women up in ‘The Comfort Zone’ ain’t no damn joke”, Sisqo said as he headed onto the main freeway to get to the meeting spot. Then he turned up the volume on his system and started blasting “No Doubt” while singing and clapping along, taking his hands away from the steering wheel.
“Man, calm yo’ silly ass down!”, Jazz exclaimed while laughing.
“Hey, I’m just doin’ me!”, Sisqo responded back laughing harder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“W’sup!”, Scola said as Woody and Nokio climbed into his ride.
“W’sup man!”, Nokio said climbing in the back.
“I’m about to be chillin’!”, Woody said with a big smile as he climbed in the passenger seat.
On their way to the club, the guys discussed the women they were going to be checking out tonight as well as what they hoped for in a future relationship.
“Ya know, It’s gettin’ kinda frustratin’ though tryna find a woman who is about somethin’”, Scola sighed.
“Wewhlllllllllllllllllllll (well)…!”, Nokio sang, mimicking a preacher while waving his hand in the air.
Wood shook his head while laughing and told him to cut it out.
“Hey, the brotha needs a witness on that one and I’m just lettin’ him know that I’m with him”, Nokio said patting himself in the chest with his fist.
“I’m juss sayin’ though…”, Scola said with a chuckle and a shake of his head.
“Well, for me, I see it like this”, Woody started. “The right woman will come along for me when I least expect it. Things tend to work out better that way; so I heard.”
“That’s true”, Nokio agreed as they pulled into a parking space at the club.
When they got out they saw Jazz and Sisqo walking up to the door.
“Yo, Jazz!”, Nokio hollered with his hands cupped around his mouth.
Sisqo and Jazz turned around and waved their arms for the guys to hurry up and meet them at the door.
As they all walked inside the darkly-lit club in their casual outfits of jeans, Timbs, and sweaters, their ears were greeted by the thumping bassline of Maxwell’s “Dance for Me”.
But they were barely inside when Sisqo spotted a tall, curvaceous woman with long wavy hair making her way past them. The white mini-dress that clung to her chocolate covered body left very little to the imagination. He winked his eye at the guys and said, “Watch this.” He swiftly slipped his arm around her waist and whisked her off to the dance floor with no questions asked. And from what the guys observed, she didn’t have any complaints with his aggressive yet smooth approach.
“Damn! He don’t be playin’”, Jazz said with laughter. “And neither do I!” The guys realized that he had seen a woman chatting over in the corner with a few of her friends. She was a caramel-colored beauty. She was dressed in a long and strapless, form-fitting black dress with thigh-high slits on either side. Her hair was in a sleek bun that was accentuated by a simple pair of diamond stud earrings.
“I’ll holla!”, he said over his shoulder as he sauntered over to her. Scola, Woody, and Nokio stood there for a few seconds to see if Jazz’s game would work. Evidently it did, because he and the woman headed towards a table and she was smiling.
“Well, that’s two for two”, Woody joked as he and the rest of the guys were getting into the atmosphere. “Yo, I’ma get me somethin’ to drink”, Nokio said. “Yall want anything?”
“Nah man, I’m aight”, Woody said.
“Hey, get me a Corona”, Scola said to him as he and Woody made their way to a table near the dance floor. “We’ll be ova’ here somewhere”.
“Aight, I’ll find ya if I don’t get lucky first,” Nokio replied with a sly grin.
“Whateva, man!”, Woody and Scola replied at the same time followed by their laughter.
They had been sitting at the table for a few minutes checking out the scenery when Scola told Woody to check out a woman who had caught his eye. Since Scola’s eyes didn’t leave what he was looking at, Woody’s eyes followed his to a slightly chunky, but curvy woman who was dancing among the crowd..
She was dressed in a crème-colored off-the-shoulder blouse with butterfly sleeves, a pair of boot-cut jeans with a black and crème wrap hanging loosely around one side of her waist, black stiletto boots, and extra-large gold-hoop earrings. Her tiny microbraids were styled in an updo which spilled back down in a fountain of loose curls.
Without taking his eyes off of her, Scola stated, “Now that’s natural right there! She don’t need on all that makeup and sh!t! She looks good the way she is.”
“That’s fo’ sho’!”, Wood said with a head nod of agreement.
She happened to look in their direction as she was turning to dance with another partner. She smiled with her eyes, never missing a beat to the music. Scola was still staring when she looked away.
“Damn! That’s one fine negro ova’ there”, she thought to herself while dancing with a guy who’s breath reeked of alcohol. “Whew! It’s time fo’ my ass to switch though!!!” With that thought, she turned around to dance with someone else.
“Yo, what yall lookin’ at?”, Nokio asked while passing Scola’s drink to him.
“The one ova’ there”, Woody said pointing his finger into the crowd. Nokio’s eyes followed his finger. “Damn! That’s somethin’ I wouldn’t mind tryna handle!” he said with a wrinkled up, but approving facial expression. “Sh!t, what am I sayin’?! I would handle all that right there!”
Scola cut his eyes at him. Nokio clapped and rubbed his hands together as he sat down and stated, “Hey man, I’m just saying…whew!!! She look like a thick ol’ creamy milkshake!”
Wood responded with, “She is tight! Why don’t you go holla at her, Sco’? ”
