Chapter Five
It’s been two weeks since she found out she was pregnant, and Samiya still hasn’t been able to get in touch with Darnell. She was beginning to think that he was intentionally avoiding her. She left messages for him but he never returned her calls. Then one night after she got home from her cosmetology class, Darnell called her.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hey Samiya I got your message. Wass up?” he asked her calmly.
“Darnell I been trying to call u for two weeks,” she stated.
“I been busy. Whatcha need to talk to me about?”
“Oh…uh…yeah there’s something I need to tell u,” she said as she got nervous. “Darnell…umm…I’m pregnant.”
“By who!?!” he asked surprised.
“You.”
“Hell naw! It ain’t me! It can’t be me!” Darnell sounded angry.
“What!?! Yes it is u. U were the last person I slept with,” Samiya said becoming defensive.
“How do I know that? Can u prove that its my kid? U coulda been sleepin around on me.”
“I can’t believe u. U cheated on me, not the other way around, Darnell.”
“Look, when u can prove the kid is mine, call me,” Darnell said hanging up on her.
Samiya was in shock. She sat there in silence for a few minutes. As soon as she could think straight, she decided to take a shower and go straight to bed.

During the past couple of weeks, Marques had been spending more time with Samiya. He wanted to make her feel better. He didn’t like seeing Samiya upset and stressed out. But in the midst of trying to comfort Samiya, he had to deal with Jasmine also. Jasmine is acting weirder as the days go by. She calls Marques all hours of the night wanting to “just talk”, and when she calls during the day she all she wants to do is argue. She stops by his apartment unannounced for no reason at all. She lies on Marques to his friends. But the weirdest thing of all is that she got Marques’ name tattooed on her leg recently. Marques just can’t figure out what’s going on with her. He is beginning to wonder if she is abusing any kind of drugs that’s causing her act this way.
As he laid in bed thinking about his current situations, he decided to call and check on Samiya.
“Hello?” she answered groggily.
“Hey baby. Was u sleep?” Marq asked.
“Kinda sorta,” she replied.
“Oh ok. I was just checking on ya. I’ll let u get back to sleep now.”
“Darnell called me,” she stated feeling sad again.
“Fa real? Did u tell him?”
“Yeah. He said the baby ain’t his. He accused me of cheating on him while we was together.”
“What!?! That n!gga crazy!” Marq said becoming angry.
“He told me not to call him unless I can prove the baby is his. But u know what? I’m not worried about it. I don’t need him,” she said as she started to cry. “And I fa damn sho don’t want him. I will get through this pregnancy by myself, I’ll raise my baby by myself, and we’ll do just fine.”
“Wait a minute. You don’t gotta do nuthin by yourself. I’m here. Did u forget about me?”
“No. But u don’t deserve to be put in my situation.”
“And u don’t deserve to be in that situation either. U…hold on. I got a beep,” he said before he clicked over.
“Hello?”
“Marq? I need to talk to u. it’s really important,” Jasmine stated.
“Hold on,” he told her before he clicked back over to Samiya.
“Samiya?”
“Yeah.”
“Look, that’s Jasmine. I gotta see what she want. U get some rest and I’ll talk to u tomorrow okay?”
“Aight,” she said feeling rejected.
“Goodnight baby.”
“Goodnight.” Samiya hung up the phone. “Did he just get off the phone with me to talk to his ex-girlfriend?” she asked herself. Samiya understood the fact that Marq still may care about Jasmine, but she doesn’t like how Jasmine has been getting so much of his attention lately. But Samiya didn’t feel like worrying about it right now. She was tired so she went back to sleep.
~Four months later~
Samiya is really showing now. A week ago, she found out that she was having a girl. She was gradually getting excited about having a baby. Now she could feel her baby kicking and moving around and she couldn’t believe that there was actually a human living inside of her. Samiya and Marques were still going strong. They have really fallen in love with each other. Samiya is still amazed at how loving, supportive, and comforting Marques has been. She was beginning to believe that Marques was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Unfortunately, Jasmine was still a big problem. She has even gotten worse. A couple of weeks ago, Jasmine beat herself up and told people that Marques had physically abused her. Marques didn’t know what to do about Jasmine. She has seriously lost her mind.
Late one night after Marques had taken Samiya out for a romantic evening, they went back to his apartment to chill and watch tv. After about half an hour of chatting with each other about what was on, Marques began to lightly kiss Samiya on her neck and shoulders. It came as a surprise at first, but Samiya liked it so she just relaxed as she fell under his spell.
“Can I make love to u?” Marq whispered softly as he kissed her collarbone.
“But I’m fat,” she replied almost in a whisper as well.
“U still sexy to me,” he said still kissing her.
“Marq I’m pregnant.”
“I won’t hurt the baby, I promise,” he assured her as he began to rub on her thigh.
“We can make love after I have the baby.”
“Quit playin.” He stopped kissing her.
“Why u stop?” she asked disappointed.
“Samiya we been together almost five months and we still haven’t been intimate,” he stated getting frustrated.
“You’re such a baby,” she said laughing. He amused her. She thought he was cute when he got frustrated.
“Oh u think it’s funny, huh?” he joked as he started to tickle her.
“Stop. I quit. I can’t breathe. U gonna make me go in labor or something,” Samiya yelled in between laughs.
Marques continued to tickle her until she ended up lying on top of him. He looked deep into her eyes then leaned up and kissed her lips softly. Wanting more, she returned his kiss with a more passionate one, which led to him carrying her to his bedroom. He gently laid her down onto his bed and they began to remove each other’s clothing as they continued to kiss passionately. Marques kissed and licked Samiya’s slightly swollen breasts as he caressed her hips and thighs. Suddenly his phone started to ring. Marques ignored it.
“Ain’t u gonna get that?” Samiya asked him.
“Nope,” he replied as he continued to plant gentle kisses all over her body.
“Hello,” Samiya asked after she picked up the phone. Marques gave her a look like “what the hell u doing”.
“Hey Samiya. Can I talk to Marq?”
“Yeah, hold on.” She handed the phone to Marq then began to put her clothes back on.
“What u want? I’m busy,” Marq asked as he tried to stop Samiya from redressing.
“Jasmine in the hospital,” Kelton told him.
“She in the hospital? For what? What happened?” Marq asked concerned.
“She said she got beat up. She look pretty bad man,” Kel replied.
“What the… how she get beat up? And by who?” Marq was getting angry.
“Man I don’t know. That’s all we could make out. She in pretty bad shape. And she asked for u,” Kel stated.
“…aight. I’m on my way,” Marques said with a sigh.
By this time, Samiya was fully dressed and Marques began to dress as well.
“What’s wrong? Where u going?” Samiya asked worried.
“Jasmine got beat up real bad or something,” Marq answered.
“Oh my God. Is she okay?”
“I don’t know. I’m going to the hospital to see her.” When noticed that Samiya didn’t respond, he glanced at her. She looked disappointed. “Look baby I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for our night t be ruined.”
“No, it’s okay. It’s not your fault. U go ahead and see about Jasmine.” She tried to sound convincing, but Marques knew she was hurt.
“I know I probably sound crazy but…u wanna go with me?” he asked Samiya.
“…you’re right. U do sound crazy, but yeah I think I wanna go.”
So Marques and Samiya got in his ride and headed for the hospital. When they had arrived, Kelton met them at the entrance. He led them to where Jasmine was. At first, Samiya was reluctant to go into Jasmine’s room. But Marques held her hand to reassure her. When they walked in, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Jasmine looked horrible. Her face was badly bruised and her left arm was in a sling. The doctor told them that her body was also badly bruised. Marques couldn’t believe that he was looking at the same beautiful girl that he had once loved. He wondered who could have done this to her and why? Shortly after the doctor left, Jasmine began to wake up. Right at that very moment, two police officers came in to the room.
“Maam, do u think u can tell us what happened?” one officer asked Jasmine before anyone else could speak.
“Somebody beat me up,” she managed to tell them.
“Can u tell me why?” the officer asked.
“Cuz he was mad at me,” Jasmine said as she began to cry.
“He? Who is he? Maam, who did this to u?”
“…It was him. He did this to me,” she stated as she pointed right at Marques.
“What!?!!?!” Marques and Samiya asked in unison.
