Damn my arm hurts like hell. I guess I should consider myself blessed though. The doctor had come in a little while ago to give me an update on what actually happened: when I was shot two nights ago, the bullet grazed my upper chest before lodging itself in my upper arm, which caused me to lose a lot of blood. The surgery to remove the bullet was successful though and, luckily, they had a supply of blood that matched the rare type I have. I’ll have to wear my arm in a sling for a while and it would have to be my right one which is the one I use the most since I’m right-handed. But trying to figure out how I was going to get more use out of my left hand now was the LEAST of my worries. After the doctor told me all about my ordeal of being shot and how I was lucky to be alive, he dropped some more drama in my lap…when they were testing my blood to find out which type I’d need to replace what I had lost, they discovered I was pregnant. That’s why he told me that he and the nurses would have to monitor how much pain medicine I could receive both orally and intravenously so my baby wouldn’t be affected by any of it.
I knew that for a while now I hadn’t been feeling right as in I felt weird: I was eating at all times of the day and night; becoming nauseated although nothing had actually been coming up; and I had missed my period even though it wasn’t always on schedule in the past anyway; believe it or not, sometimes I’d go three whole months without having to deal with it. I was thinking that all of this was stemming from the stress of what Shad had put me through lately though. Boy was I wrong!
Turning my head towards the window, I watched the sky while lightly rubbing my stomach being careful not to aggravate the IV inserted in my hand.
“Hey, girl. How are you?” Amaya cooed as she came running over to my bed followed by Chris who walked in behind her. She proceeded to push some of my hair away from my eye.
“Aight…but could be betta,” I faintly smiled. “Hey, CB.”
“W’sup, Cee-Cee. You gave us all a scare the otha night. Glad you’re doin’ betta though,” he grinned as he walked over to the other side of my bed. “Here, we know how shitty this hospital food can be,” he chuckled while shoving a McDonald’s bag in my face.
I gently pushed it back towards him. “You didn’t have to do that. Besides I’m not all that hungry since I sipped a lil’ bit of chicken broth not too long ago for my breakfast.” However, as soon as the aroma from the McGriddle in the bag went across my nose, I quickly snatched it back from him opening it up just in time. I guess I spoke too soon about being nauseated, only, because this time I was actually vomiting.
“Oh no! Are you okay?!” Amaya anxiously asked while helping me to sit up.
I quickly nodded my head as I continuously spewed clear liquid into the bag. It was like the more the scent of the food hit my nose, the more I would vomit on top of it.
“I’ll go get the nurse,” Chris announced while wearing a screwed up face. He was thinking to himself “there goes my extra breakfast!” as he ran out the room.
By the time he and a nurse came back close to a minute later, I was lying back on my pillow taking slow deep breaths as I wiped my mouth with a paper towel Amaya handed to me while the bag rested on my chest.
“Hun, had you been feelin’ okay up until now?” the young nurse asked in a squeaky-like voice while feeling my forehead with the back of her pale hand.
I couldn’t say anything, so I nodded my head. Then out of nowhere, I began to bawl like a blubbering fool, and I’m talking being heard up and down the hall by the other patients and staff until Amaya took it upon herself to close my door.
“Is this normal for her?” she whispered afterwards while she and Chris followed the nurse as she walked over to a laptop on a table in the far corner of the room so she could check my vitals.
“Yes, she’s probably having a mild reaction from the morphine in her IV. It’s normal for vomiting to take place because of it,” the nurse answered as she began to peck away on the keyboard.
“But what about the crying?” Chris asked with an uneasy look on his face.
“The crying could be because of all that she’s been through…poor thing,” the nurse sighed while quickly glancing over her shoulder at me before coming back over to my bed.
“Sweetie, I’m going to contact Dr. Stanford to see if it’s all right to give you something to help you rest if you want it as soon as I help you change into a clean gown. Is that okay?”
I slowly nodded my head as my broken sobs began to quiet down.
“Could I ask you two to wait out in the hall for just a few minutes so I can help her change?” the nurse asked while glancing over at Amaya and Chris. They both agreed to do so.
Once the nurse helped me change into a clean gown, I went to the bathroom while she quickly changed my linen.
“I’ll be back in a few minutes if the doctor says it’s all right to give you something to help you rest. Is there anything else you need?”
“No thank you,” I quietly replied with a weak smile as she helped me back into my bed.
“Okay.” She quickly left my room.
Several seconds later, Chris and Amaya came back in.
“We’re gonna go so you can get some rest, but before you leave, is there anything you wanted from downstairs like a magazine or somethin’?” Amaya asked after approaching my bed once more while Chris waited in the doorway.
I shook my head as I slowly sat up with her assistance. “No thanks, but if you could…tell me how am I supposed to take care of a baby on my own.”
Amaya stared at me for a good five or six seconds with a surprised expression on her face.
“Ummm…I’ma let you two talk. I’ll be waitin’ out here in the hall,” Chris quietly stated before closing my door.
Amaya pulled up a chair close to my bedside and quickly took a seat in it. “You’re pregnant?”
I nodded my head as I lowered my eyes. “The doctor said I’m 13 weeks accordin’ to what my blood test revealed.”
Meanwhile, as Chris was leaning up against the wall next to my door, he happened to glance down the hall and saw Shad walking towards him. However, as soon as he saw the solemn look on Chris’ face, he began to run in his direction.
“What is it? Is Cee-Cee all right?” he anxiously whispered.
“Yeah, man. She’s cool; but she had a lil’ episode a few minutes ago. Maya’s talkin’ with her now.”
“What kinda episode?”
“The nurse said she was probably havin’ a reaction to the morphine they’re givin’ her for her pain and then she just bust out cryin’ and shit. She was real upset,” Chris sighed with a shake of his head. He thought about tellin’ Shad my mentioning of being pregnant, but he felt it was best for him to find out from me and not him. “Oh here comes the nurse; she said she was goin’ to check with the doctor to see if it was okay to give her somethin’ to rest.”
As the nurse came walking back in my room, I saw Shad following in behind her. My look of sadness quickly changed into a look of anger as I glanced back over at Amaya as she stood up.
“We’ll talk about things some more when you’re up to it. Right now you need to get your rest. I’ll come by again tomorrow to check on you. Take care,” she faintly smiled while gently grabbing the fingers of my hand that were lying across my stomach.
“Okay, thanks,” I smiled back while looking up at her. Chris also came in to tell me goodbye as well before leaving.
In the meantime, Shad took a seat in the chair that Amaya had been sitting in earlier.
“You aight,” he asked while watching me closely as the nurse pushed up the sleeve of my gown. She proceeded to wipe my shoulder with an alcohol swab.
I nodded my head while keeping my eyes glued to the television. However, as soon as I felt the needle being inserted into my arm, I tightly shut my eyes while taking a deep breath.
“There we go,” the nurse chimed while pulling my sleeve back down. “You should be well-relaxed in a while. I’ll come back to check on you around supper time.”
“Okay,” I replied as I slowly opened my eyes back up. I watched her as she walked out the room and closed the door behind her. I then glanced over at Shad as he stood up while wearing a small smile. When he leaned over to plant a kiss on my cheek, I quickly turned my face away from him. “What are you doin’ here?”
“What?” he asked while frowning.
“What are you doin’ here?” I proceeded to turn my head just enough to glare at him.
“I came to make sure you were okay, or was I not supposed to do that?” he snapped while glaring back at me.
I shrugged my shoulders as I glanced back up at the TV. “I’on’t know…maybe I’m wrong for thinkin’ that you didn’t care about me anymore.”
He let out a deep sigh as he sat back down. Gently taking my hand into his, he began to lightly run his thumb back and forth across it being careful not to aggravate the IV. “That’s somethin’ I could never stop doin’.”
I gave him an indifferent look as I glanced over at him before returning my eyes to the TV. “Glad to hear it because there’s someone else you’re gonna have to start carin’ for too.”
“Huh?” he asked as his thumb came to a standstill on my hand.
“I just found out from the doctor this mornin’ that I’m pregnant when he came in to check on me.” I continued to watch the TV although I could see Shad staring at me out of the corner of my eye.
“How?!” he blurted out.
I couldn’t help from laughing as I faced him once more. Before I knew it, we were both laughing. Then I watched him as he lowered his head while standing up.
“I mean, I know HOW it happened, but, what I meant to ask was…,” he blushed before looking at me.
“I know,” I faintly smiled as we gazed at each other. For the first time since the day I caught him with some groupie-ho, I was glad to actually have him with me.
“So is there any way we can work things out?” he asked as he sat down next to me on the bed while facing me and taking my hand back into his.
“I honestly don’t know,” I sighed while shaking my head.
“Could you at least think about it?”
“Yeah,” I yawned as my eyelids began to feel heavy. “So what names do you have for our baby?”
“What?” he asked with a puzzled look.
“We gotta name this kid somethin’,” I replied before loudly yawning once again. “Throw some names out at me.” I closed my eyes while listening to him pull his chair up close to my bed. But instead of saying anything, he gently laid his head down next to my arm to watch TV. Besides, he knew it had to be my medicine talking as it put me to sleep. When he still hadn’t said anything close to a minute later, I spoke up although I kept my eyes closed.
“C’mon…gimme a few suggestions,” I whined in between two yawns.
Lifting his head up and taking one look at me, he knew I was about gone so he decided to have some fun. “If it’s a girl…let’s name her, ummmm…let’s name her Boomquisha Licious.”
“That’s pretty,” I slurred while clumsily patting the back of his head. “What about a boy?”
Laughing, he went on. “If it’s a boy, let’s name him DJ Unk.” This time around he was laughing even harder than before, but lost it when I said that was a good name too. When he was finally able to regain his composure, he advised me to go to sleep.
“I’m not sleepy,” I yawned for one final time while placing my hand up to the side of his face as he watched me. My arm immediately fell back down to my side as I began to snore.
