What Is It Gonna Be by Mario
Verse 1: Baby, baby I think Prince might’ve said it best When he said the beautiful ones They hurt you every time She’s the reason for all my stress And yet she’s the only one That can truly ease my mind And I think that we could be all right Ooh the way that we just chill How she touch me and how she kiss yeah If it wasn’t for her other guy I can’t stand to think that he’s getting The same loving that I get So tell me what is it gonna be
Chorus: Make a decision There’s just one (oh) Tell him that you want me I know what I want (what I want) Girl I want you So what is it gonna be
Verse 2: Ooh I can’t get enough Make your mind up Let me know what you want I’m not complaining Okay I am Wanna be your man But is it the way So I can’t understand And I think that we could be all right Ooh the way that we just chill How she touch me and how she kiss me If it wasn’t for her other guy (hey) I can’t stand to think that he’s getting The same loving that I get So tell me what is it gonna be
Bridge: And it’s hard to see you happy It’s probably ‘cause you just left me And that’s so unfair to me Only if you could get rid of him We could be happy Baby let me know What is it gonna be

"C'mon to your aunty, boo," I cooed as I picked up my one-year-old goddaughter, Tyasia, from her mother and my best friend, Milani's, lap while she waited to get her hair done. I had just finished getting my weekly 'do done up after my last manicure customer left about an hour beforehand. I wouldn’t have another appointment for a few hours so I decided to go up the block to stop by and see my man at his place of business which is a mechanic/detailing shop. He's had it a little over a year now.
"Thanks, girl. I need a break," Milani laughed while watching me bounce Tyasia on my hip. She began to quiet down after whining for close to twenty minutes after they arrived.
"No prob; besides I don't get to see my Tee-Tee as much as I'd like to," I smiled before placing a soft kiss on her chubby cheek. "I'ma go get Brian somethin' for lunch and bring her back here in about an hour if that's okay."
"Girl, that is fine with me!"
"Aight," I chuckled. "Tell Mommy bye-bye." I proceeded to lift up one of Tyasia's hand to wave it at Milani.
"Bye-bye," she stated while waving.
“Bye, Lil’ Momma,” Milani grinned.
When I stepped outside, the heat nearly took my breath away. The DJ on the radio back inside the shop said that it was 97 degrees even though to me it felt like it was way hotter than that. In any case, I began my walk across the street as the sun beat down on my newly relaxed cut to pick up a fish sandwich and fries for Brian from Donny's Diner.
As soon as I walked inside the diner I was met by Musiq's "B.U.D.D.Y." loudly playing and noticed Milani's baby daddy's boy, LaRon, sitting in a booth next to the entrance with a guy I hadn't seen before. Before making my way up to the counter to place my order, I stopped long enough to say w'sup to LaRon while Tyasia clapped her hands as she tried to sing. Milani had told me a couple of weeks ago that she's played Musiq’s song so much that her baby can't help but try to sing it now.
"Hey, Ron-Ron. W'sup," I smiled as I stood next to him.
"W'sup, girl. 'Sup, Tee-Tee!" he grinned as he reached up to playfully pinch Tyasia’s leg.
"Nee-woe-kee-gee-iiiiiiiiiiii!" she loudly sang as she continued to clap her hands. This made me, LaRon, and the guy sitting across from him laugh.
"Sing it baby!" LaRon grinned as he bopped his head to the music while watching her.
"I'm tryna calm her lil' self down as it is," I smirked while switching her to my other hip. As I was doing so, my eyes met ol' dude's eyes as he watched us. "Hey."
"W'sup," he smiled.
"Oh, this is Mario. He was hookin' up my ride over at your man's shop a lil' while ago."
"Oh, okay. So you're the new worker he said he hired last week," I stated while continuing to watch him.
"Yeah," he replied with a nod of his head before asking if Tyasia was my daughter.
“Actually, she’s my goddaughter. I'm Hannah. Nice to meet you. I'll see ya lata," I smiled as I glanced back at LaRon before leaving their booth while Tyasia still kept singing.
Once again, I found myself thinking about how nice it would be if LaRon and my baby sister, Hope, could hook up with one another. But I knew that this could never happen for the simple fact that our parents wouldn’t stand for it. They could’ve cared less about Brian or anyone else I have or could hook up with because in their eyes I have always been no good anyway. But Hope? Nah, they could never see her going for a guy like LaRon because he’s too thugged out for their taste as far as how he dresses; plus although he’s never done anything illegal to my knowledge, he still hustles to get what he needs and wants. He’s still a sweet, adorable and down-to-earth guy in spite of all of this though. But oh well…
"You might as well stop lookin' so hard," LaRon smirked when he saw Mario watching me as he placed his straw in his mouth to sip his Pepsi. His eyes had automatically dropped to my booty that my denim capris were clinging to as I headed up to the counter.
"Man, I ain't lookin' that hard," he chuckled as he picked up a few fries and placed them in his mouth although he continued to watch me as I waited in line while playfully kissing and loving on Tyasia.
"Okay, so maybe I am," he chuckled as he returned his eyes to his plate to pick up the rest of his philly cheese steak sandwich. He took a huge bite out of it before going on. “But if she’s Brian’s girl, then she’s not the only one ‘cause I seen that nigga up in every female’s face that’s come through the shop since I been there.”
“Tell me somethin’ I don’t know. His ass been playin’ Hannah ever since she got with him and everybody knows he treats her like shit. That’s why we can’t understand why she continues to stay with him with his funny-lookin’, peanut-shaped head ass,” LaRon smirked with a shake of his head as he glanced over in my direction.
“Now that you mention it, the nigga is kinda homely-lookin’,” Mario laughed.
“Kinda? The nigga IS!” LaRon laughed harder before they moved on to talking about what they were going to do for the upcoming weekend.
Several minutes later, as I was making my way over to the door to leave, my eyes met Mario's once again and we both smiled at each other.
"Here comes your girl, man; chill," Brian's best friend and co-owner of the shop, Corey, whispered when he saw me approaching them as they both stood in the entrance of the garage. Brian was talking about a female he had been seeing on the regular behind my back just seconds before I appeared.
"W'sup?" he emptily replied right after I was standing in front of him.
"Hey. I knew it was close to your lunchtime so I stopped over at Donny's to pick up some lunch for you." I handed him the brown bag that was already soaked with grease at the bottom of it.
"What’s this?" he asked while opening the bag. However, I didn't get a chance to tell him because as soon as the fish scent hit his nose, he began to go off. "Why didn't you call me before pickin' this shit up? I ain't want no damn fish!"
"Ummm...there is a child in your presence," I replied in a hushed tone while bouncing the baby on my hip.
"Well you shouldn't have brought this to me. I was about to go pick up somethin' anyway."
"So this is the thanks I get for tryna look out for you?" I huffed.
"Man, gon' somewhere with that bullshit," he replied with a roll of his eyes while waving me off. He then turned to look at Corey and told him to ride with him across town to pick up something to eat from the local steakhouse.
"Yo, dawg...c'mon though; you need to show a lil' more respect to your woman," he sighed.
Brian glanced at me for a quick second before shaking his head as he went back in the garage to grab his keys so they could get his car that was parked out back. On their way around the building to leave, he tossed the bag of food I bought him into a nearby trashcan on the sidewalk without saying as much as goodbye to me.
I was so embarrassed by what had just taken place that I quickly turned around and walked back down the street to head back to the shop.
“What’s wrong with you, girl?” Milani asked as soon as I walked inside with Tyasia.
“Guess,” I sniffed as I sat down next to her in an empty hair-drying chair. I was comfortable in letting my tears fall in front of everybody inside since we were all good friends in the first place. I held Tyasia close to me since she wasn’t ready to go back to Milani yet.
I watched as Milani reached behind her to quickly turn her dryer off. “Okay, don’t tell me it’s Brian again! How many more times you gonna let that nigga treat you like dirt?” she huffed as she stared at me. I wiped at my tears that were steadily streaming down my face.
“Look, you can talk to her while that big-ass head of yours dries at the same time! Put that hood back down! I got otha customers to work on after you!” our stylist, Shanitra, huffed as she approached us. She immediately hit the switch to turn Milani’s dryer back on while slamming the hood back down on her head.
“Forget you and your customers!” she huffed as Shanitra walked back over to her booth to straighten it up.
“You can always leave, wench!” she snapped before looking at me. “But she’s right, Hannah. You don’t deserve the changes he’s always takin’ you through.” She paused for a moment while looking out the window behind us before talking again. “Now what you NEED to do is hook up with somebody like that! He look like he knows how to treat a woman if he ain’t got one already! Besides Brian is ugly AND ungrateful…you know that’s a triflin’ combination right?” she laughed. Everyone else, including myself, started laughing. It wasn’t like she was lying. My man wasn’t the most attractive one to come along. He was extra skinny, bald-headed, and wore gold fronts on both his top and bottom teeth. To this day, I STILL don’t know what it is that makes me stay with him.
“Anyway,” I smirked while turning in my chair to see who she was looking at while bouncing Tyasia on my lap. I found out as soon as I laid my eyes on Mario while he strolled across the street to head back over to Brian’s shop. I was in a dazed-like state as I watched the way his opened black button-down short-sleeved shirt blew back behind him in the breeze while showing off his broad chest although he was wearing a wife-beater underneath it that clung to him; not to mention how his jeans were hanging just right. When I was finally able to force my eyes to look away from him, I saw LaRon walking down to the corner store to meet up with some of his boys who were standing around.
“Girl, I’m tryna tell ya…if I didn’t have a good husband at home, I’d be tryna jump all ova that!” Shanitra went on as he headed up the block.
“I know that’s right!” Milani agreed as she watched him as well after lifting the hood of her dryer up once again.
“Get your head back up under that dryer! I swear if I got to tell you one more time!” Shanitra warned while waving a hot comb around as she glared at her.
“Even if I wanted to get with that I couldn’t since he’s Brian’s new help,” I blushed as I turned back around in my chair to watch “All My Children” on the tv over in the far corner of the shop.
“And? What Brian doesn’t know won’t hurt him. Sheeeeeeeit! You betta learn how to play the game, girlfriend, and stop bein’ played,” Shanitra slyly grinned while throwing me a wink.
“Yeah, whateva,” I bashfully smiled with a shake of my head as my mind quickly drifted off to daydreaming about what it would be like to be hooked up with a fine-ass man like Mario. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“How was your first day of classes, baby?” Momma asked Hope when she glanced up and saw her walking into the kitchen.
“Okay, I guess,” she faintly smiled as she sat her backpack down on the table before going over to the sink to wash her hands.
“Just okay?” Momma proceeded to return her attention the pot of rice she was cooking.
“Yeah; I mean nothing exciting happened. I just have a bunch of homework and studying to do already and it’s only the first day.”
“That’s how college life is; especially for a Pre-Med student, baby,” Momma chuckled. “Want me to fix you a sandwich?”
“No thanks. I picked up a salad from McDonald’s in between classes not too long ago and I’m still full from it. Where’s Daddy? I noticed his car wasn’t in the garage.”
“Yeah, he and Deacon Johnson went down to the church for a while. They’re preparing for the revival that starts on Monday night. He’s very excited about it.”
“When isn’t Daddy excited when a revival is being held at the church?” Hope chuckled with a shake of her head as she grabbed her backpack.
“You know how your Daddy is. He takes pride in his church and always wants to make a good impression when something big goes on there like revivals.”
“You are so right about that. Well, I guess I’ll go upstairs to start on some of this work unless you need me to stay down here and help you.”
“No, I’m fine. You go on up to your room and stick that pretty head of yours in your books. I want’chu to keep up those straight-A’s you’ve always made. Your Daddy and I are so proud of you.”
Before she knew what was happening, Hope found herself being grabbed up in a big hug by Momma after she practically ran over to her.
“Thanks, Momma,” she sighed while lightly patting her back.
When their embrace was over, she walked into the den and made her way upstairs to her room. However, instead of studying right away, she laid down across her bed on her back while staring up at the ceiling. Even though our parents are pleased with her, she’s not pleased with herself. She began to think about how she has always been labeled the “good daughter” while I’m still labeled “the bad seed”. Sometimes she wishes she could’ve been the rebel instead of me because in her eyes, I have always lived my life the way I’ve wanted to while she lives the life that our parents have always wanted us both to live. But what can she do? After all, it would be a terrible thing for our father, a well-known minister in the area, to have TWO rebellious daughters.
She was about to doze off until she heard her cell phone playing Fantasia’s “Hood Boy”. She knew it could only be one person that she had set her ringer to play this song to.
“Hey, sis,” she smiled.
“Hey, babygirl,” I smiled back. “I was just callin’ to see how your first day of classes went since I remembered you sayin’ that your last one would be around 2:30 each day.” It was going on 5:20 .
“It was okay. But you wouldn’t believe the homework I’m facin’,” she smirked as she rolled over onto her stomach.
“Oh, well then I’d betta not tell ya what I was callin’ about,” I chuckled.
“Welllllllll, I was gonna invite you to a picnic that B’s havin’ down at the park on this Saturday for his workers; but since you have a lot of work facin’ you, I’d betta not tempt ya.”
“Quit playin’ with me! You KNOW I’ll be there. Just tell me what time to be ready.”
“Listen at you soundin’ like you can’t wait to get outta that house,” I laughed.
“It’s beginnin’ to be that way for me,” she sighed while glancing out of her window.
“I keep tellin’ you that I have plenty of room here for you at my place.”
“You know good and well that Momma and Daddy aren’t gonna go for me movin’ in with you. Remember that you live in sin 90% of the time that Brian stays over there,” she joked.
“Whateva,” I huffed. “You’re practically a woman now so don’t’chu think it’s about time that you stop livin’ for them and live for yourself? I mean don’t get me wrong…I’m not tryna corrupt ya or nothin’ like that, but you’re a pretty, intelligent, young woman who deserves the right to do what you feel like doin’ for a change.”
“Hannah, you gotta remember that Momma and Daddy are payin’ my way through college and he felt it was best that I stay at home instead of in a dorm because he said livin’ on campus wouldn’t be a good idea because of the many temptations I’d be faced with. They want me to keep up my grades so I can make somethin’ of myself.”
“And I haven’t?” I asked in a sarcastic tone.
“Of course you have. But I’m just sayin’ that I don’t need the extra added stress of tryna explain to Momma but ESPECIALLY Daddy why it would be cool if I could come live with you.”
“I understand, babygirl, and I’m sorry,” I sighed.
“About always tryna fill your head with what I think you should do. I guess I’m no betta than they are, huh?”
“Don’t say that. You’re my big sister and it’s natural for you to worry about me. But enough about all that…are ya gonna tell me what time I should be ready on Saturday or not?” she laughed.
“Drop by my place around 1:00 and we can ride with Milani,” I smiled.
“Alrighty then. I guess I’d betta go ahead and get started with this work since I have two days left until fun time.”
“Bye,” I chuckled.
“Bye.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had fallen asleep on the sofa while watching tv when I heard my front door opening.
“Relax, it’s only me, boo,” Brian grinned when he saw how quickly I sat up with my fists raised in the air. I noticed that he was toting a bouquet of roses.
I took a deep sigh while grabbing the remote from the coffee table to turn the tv off. Glancing up at the clock hanging above the tv, I saw that it was going on 11:00 .
“What are you doin’ here this late?” I asked as I stood up. However, I already knew that he had either been out with his boys or with some female. I proceeded to walk down the hallway to my room to get ready for bed since I had taken a shower earlier.
“What’chu talkin’ about late, girl?” he smiled as he walked up behind me while I turned the covers back on my bed. After turning on the lamp on my nightstand and tossing the roses down on the bed, he wrapped his arms around me and placed a kiss behind my ear. I immediately smelled the heavy scent of weed on his breath.
“Stop,” I mumbled while trying to push his hands away from me as he kept running them all across my breasts and stomach after reaching his hands up underneath my t-shirt.
“I will once you accept my apology. You know I didn’t mean that shit I did today.” This time he placed a kiss on my cheek while pushing me forward onto the bed.
“And it took you all of ten hours to want to apologize?” I asked while glaring up at him after he turned me over onto my back.
He reached out and pulled one of the roses from the paper wrapper next to us. Without answering my question, he smiled before placing his lips on mine. After kissing me, he slowly raised my t-shirt up just above my navel while lying down next to me and began to lightly rub the petals of the rose back and forth across it.
“Do you wanna accept my apology or not?” he whispered while glancing up at me as he let his fingers of his free hand slowly move down to the top of my boyshorts.
“It all depends,” I sighed as I sat up on my elbows to look down at him.
“It depends on if you’re gonna do right by me this time. I can’t keep goin’ through all this drama with all the females I keep hearin’ about and the way you disrespect me.”
He nodded his head as he began to tug my boyshorts off.
“So aren’t you gonna say somethin’ about what I just said?”
“Nah, boo,” he slyly grinned with a shake of his head as he pulled me closer to him.
“What the hell you mean…no?” I heavily sighed while falling back.
“That’s why,” he smirked after lifting his head up long enough to look at me before lowering it again.
Even though I know Brian ain’t about shit, I can always count on his head game to fix things between us, even if for a little while.
