From where the story last left off...
“Look at you,” Momma gasped in surprise when she opened the front door for me close to a month later. After work I went down to my hairdresser and had her give me a new look since I decided that I was gonna start my life anew after I accepted the fact that from here on out Nick would be nothing more than a friend to me. It just so happened that my hairdresser hooked me up with a cute page-boy cut that she dyed a bright shade of auburn.
“How do you like it,” I asked while playfully turning around on the porch so she could see how much of my hair had been whacked and chopped off in the back.
“It’s adorable! But I know your Daddy is gonna have a hissy fit when he sees it! You know how he’s always felt about women cutting their hair.” Momma reached out to touch it as if she couldn’t believe that I had actually gotten rid of just about all of my hair.
“He’ll live,” I smirked as she and I went inside and headed for the kitchen. She went back to washing and drying a few dinner dishes which I immediately began to help her with. “By the way, what’s Howard doin’ here? I noticed his pick-up truck parked in the driveway when I pulled up next to it."
“Oh he’s out back helpin’ your daddy put the flooring down in the sunroom.”
“Oh yeah. How’s that comin’ along?”
“It’s comin’ along very nicely. They have been doin’ a good job.”
“So Howard’s been helpin’ him all along?”
“Uh huh. But I think your daddy likes havin’ him around just so he can have someone to talk to if nothin’ else. You know how talkative that man can be.”
“You don’t have to tell me,” I chuckled. Just then, Daddy and Howard came walking into the kitchen announcing that they were calling it a night.
“Mary, would you mind gettin’ me and Howard…,” he began until he stopped in his tracks while staring at me over his eyeglasses with eyes that grew to the size of saucers. “Gal, do you know that all your hair is gone?!”
“Yes, Daddy. I’m well aware of that,” I chuckled with a roll of my eyes.
“What possessed you to do a John Brown thing like that?!”
“Oh hush up and leave Cherish alone. She’s a grown woman and can do what she wants with her head,” Momma huffed while placing his and Howard’s glass of her homemade lemonade on the kitchen table.
After thanking Momma, Howard spoke up. “I like it. You look real good, Cherish, although it wasn’t like you didn’t look good before.” He proceeded to throw me a quick wink while taking a few gulps of his drink.
“Thanks,” I found myself blushing before noticing that Daddy was continuing to stare me down over his eyeglasses while drinking his lemonade as well.
“It’s just not natural for a woman to go and do some mess like that to her head,” he huffed with a shake of his as he handed his now empty glass to Momma for her to put in the sink.
“Okay, Daddy. Whateva you say,” I smirked as I walked up to him and placed a light kiss on his cheek before asking him if it was okay for me to go take a look at the sunroom.
“Yeah, gon’,” he mumbled with a wave of his hand as he headed for the bathroom to take a quick shower.
“Mind some company,” Howard asked just as I was about to walk past him to head over to the side door that would lead me out to the sunroom.
“No, I don’t mind,” I found myself blushing again as I quickly cut my eyes over at Momma who was smiling at the both of us before turning back around to finish putting the dishes away.
::Thinking:: Now I been knowing this fool’s skinny black ass just about all of my life, but I have gotten butterflies two times in a row within the last 5 minutes just from the way he keeps smiling and looking at me. And all this coming from a guy that I KNOW has a reputation for being a dog!
“Watch your step,” he cautioned as he went down the two steps ahead of me while hitting the light switch on the wall before holding his hand out to help me down. As soon as I placed my hand in his, I DEFINITELY felt something although I was willing myself not to. And I also noticed how he firmly intertwined his fingers through mine as we both began to walk around the overwhelmingly spacious room.
“Whoa, this is niiiiiiiiiiiice,” I sighed in awe as I looked all around. “Momma was right; you and Daddy have been doin’ a good job.”
“Thanks, even though your dad’s been doin’ the majority of the work as far as the design plan, puttin’ in the windows and all that stuff. I’ve been doin’ the easy work like the electrical wirin’ and puttin’ the floor down,” he smiled while cutting his eyes at me.
“Cool,” I smiled back. “You two will have this finished in no time.”
“Yup,” he agreed with a nod of his head.
I let go of his hand as I began to go on and on about how Dashara and I couldn’t wait to help Momma decorate what she had already claimed her getaway room. The whole time I was doing this, Howard went over to a worktable that was in the corner, leaned up against it, and folded his arms while admiring my rearview the entire time. However, I didn’t know this until I turned around in mid-sentence.
“I think Momma should put a flat-screen in this corner and her…Is there any reason why you’re lookin’ at me like that?” I proceeded to place my hands on my hips while trying to mean-mug him although it was hard to do so.
::Thinking:: Damn, you’se an adorable-lookin’ nigga right now!
“I was tryna think of the best way to ask you out after a whole year,” he smirked before placing a cigarette in his mouth. When I saw him about to go in his jeans pocket to get his lighter out I marched up to him and yanked the cigarette from in between his lips.
“Those are bad for you,” I huffed while breaking the cigarette in two and placing the pieces back in his hand. I then turned and walked away before turning back around to face him. “And I’ve already told you one time before that I’ve known you long enough to know that you run games on females too much for me to even think about goin’ out with you.”
“And I told you that was only because I hadn’t found the right one for me until now, maybe,” he slyly grinned as he walked up on me while tossing his broken cigarette into an empty box that was nearby. “So w’sup, you gonna let me take you out or what?”
For several seconds, I stood frozen while gazing into his eyes as I twirled my fingers between the hem of my hooded sweater and t-shirt that I had on underneath it. Then before I could stop myself, I stood up on my tip-toes and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
“How about you pick me up for lunch on Friday and then we can discuss the possibility of doin’ somethin’ more adventurous and fun this weekend?”
::Thinking:: Although I’m in disbelief right now, I got one thing to say: YOU BETTA GO, HEFFA! That’s right! YOU have some fun for a change!!!
“Aight. I like the sound of that,” he grinned with a nod of his head.
“Okay then. Well I guess I’d betta be goin’. I stopped here long enough to show Momma and Daddy what I had done,” I chuckled while running my hand down the back of my head.
“Yeah, I gotta run too and get outta these smelly clothes,” he joked as he followed me back up into the kitchen. However, he couldn’t do so without pinching me. “Mmmmph…to think that I MIGHT have the privilege of sayin’ this belongs to me.”
I quickly turned around and hit at him although he quickly moved out of the way. “Don’t even start that,” I warned even though we both started laughing.
After telling Momma and Daddy goodbye, Howard and I made our way out to our rides. While he sat on the flatbed of his truck, I stood in between his legs while playing with the strings on his hoodie as we talked about nothing in the dusk darkness that was surrounding us. Well that was until we heard some voices two driveways down from us. When I looked up, my mouth fell open when I saw Yelina being walked out to her car while all hugged up on one of my parents’ neighbors and dearest friends, Mr. Everton. We’ve all known him since I was a little girl. He lost his wife to breast cancer about three years ago and it was no secret that his old behind thought he was the black Hugh Hefner since he always had a young, pretty girl on his arm since then. If only he knew it was his money and Viagra that had those young, hoochified gold-diggers flocking to him like moths to a flame.
“Damn,” I whispered while shaking my head at them.
“That’s Nick’s girl ain’t it,” Howard asked as he stared at them along with me.
“Yup. Now I know where I’ve seen her before. This ain’t the first time I’ve seen her ova there.”
“Well, that’s what Nick’s ass gets for lettin’ all this go,” he smirked while whacking me on the behind.
I pushed him upside his head. “Look, nigga, I done told you one time.”
“Anyway, I gotta go. I’ll call you lata on,” he chuckled as he walked me over to my ride to open my door for me. As soon as he closed it shut and I pulled out of the driveway, I immediately dialed Millie up.
“Milsap, speak and be heard,” he announced even though he knew it was me from my number that showed up on his ID.
“Millie, girlfriend, have I got some SHIT to tell you…!”
“Look at you,” Momma gasped in surprise when she opened the front door for me close to a month later.
