Wow, I never thought I’d finally be out with one of the cutest and sweetest females from the old neighborhood, Sky Garris. I remember having the BIGGEST crush on her back in the day when she was my counselor at the youth center where I went every afternoon after school or everyday during the summertime. And it never mattered to me that she was a full-grown woman in her mid-20s.
Back then, she kept her hair in these skinny-ass bright-red braids and had a lot more body than she does now; but even then she was stacked nicely. Not only did she always have my full attention, but she had the other lil’ niggas’ attention as well as some of the male counselors even though there were other female counselors there; but they just didn’t have that swagger that Sky Garris had. However, the bad part for all of us was that she had a man who would always drop by to see her.
Anyway, I was around 13 when I started going to the center and I would deliberately do things to get in trouble just so I could be by Sky’s side during different activities or outings that our age group was involved in. But she would often tell me and the peers in my group that I rolled with that we, but ESPECIALLY me, were gonna be the reason why she’d get her tubes tied before even trying to have kids of her own. Now while a statement like that would’ve normally torn down a lil’ nigga’s dream of getting on her good side, that only made me crush on her more. And for the record, I wasn’t ALWAYS a bad-ass around Sky. There were times when I would help her run off copies of fliers and stuff when my boys would be in the gym or outside playing ball where I should’ve been. Or sometimes if I knew my moms would be a little late picking me up, Sky would let me sit in her office and do my homework while she did some paperwork and we’d talk about stuff like the good grades I always made in school or what I’d plan to do after high school and whatnot. That’s the other thing that caused my school-boy crush on her…she was always encouraging me to do my best and to never let anything or anybody stand in my way.
Then just like that…it all ended a year later. One cloudy fall afternoon right after my crew and I got off the van that carried us to the center everyday from school, we walked inside and noticed that everybody was gathering in the gym. When we went in there, it was decorated with colorful streamers and balloons. And there hanging on the back wall was a huge white banner that read in large black letters, “WE’LL MISS YOU SKY!”
Now I was supposed to be a tough lil’ nigga in front of my boys but I felt this large lump forming in my throat. After telling them I’d be back in a minute, I went back out into the hall and headed for Sky’s office. As soon as I made it there, I saw her packing her things in a couple of small boxes along with her man’s help.
“Oh hi, Omari,” she smiled right after looking up from what she was doing as she stood behind her desk.
“So this is Omari?” Her man stopped what he was doing and walked over to me and gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder. “Hi, I’m Raheem. Sky’s told me a lot of cool things about you.” All I could do was faintly smile while looking over at her.
“Yeah, I’m gonna miss this one the most,” she chuckled as she walked over to me and tapped my nose with her finger. I couldn’t believe this shit! She and her man were treating me like I was a damn puppy or something.
“Where you goin’?” I found myself bluntly asking her after getting over the shock of knowing she was leaving me.
“I’ve been offered a job as a paralegal out in Sacramento. I start on next week.” She was wearing a proud grin on her face.
“Oh. That’s nice. Bye.” I turned and headed out of her office with my head hung low as I headed back to the gym. For the rest of the afternoon while everybody else danced, gave Sky well-wishes, and ate, I was outside shooting baskets by myself. Well that is until I heard Sky calling my name as she headed over in my direction.
“Omari, why aren’t you inside? You’re gonna miss out on all the food and cake that’s left.”
“I’m not hungry,” I mumbled as I missed a basket I was attempting to make. As soon as the ball bounced off the backboard and back in my direction, I caught it and slammed it upside the brick wall with all the strength I had. I was about to stomp away so Sky wouldn’t see how bad I was hurting over her going away when she ran up behind me and placed her arm around my shoulder. Without thinking twice about it, I weakly placed my arm around her waist as she led us over to a bench across the court so we could sit down.
“Is everything okay at school?” she asked while gently rubbing my back.
I nodded my head as I leaned forward while slowly rubbing my hands together. She then went on to ask if things were going good at home which I nodded my head again. By this time, some of the younger kids and their assigned counselors came outside so they could play on the playground since the sun was beginning to peek through the gray clouds.
“I’ll be alright, but thanks for everything,” I sighed before leaning over and planting a small kiss on Sky’s cheek. I made my way back inside and hung out with my crew to get my mind off of her. And that was the last time I spoke to her before she left that day...
“Earth to O!” Dreux began to slowly wave his hand back and forth across my face as he sat down next to me at the bar. While Sky and Taylor went to the restroom as we waited for a table, Dreux had been down at the other end of the bar talking with someone he knew. I decided to go ahead and sit down after ordering my drink and had unknowingly drifted down memory lane with Sky.
“My bad,” I smirked with a shake of my head as I looked into my empty glass.
“So hurry up and tell me about why you’re so glad to be hooked up with Sky tonight.” Dreux slightly turned on his stool to look at me while waiting for me to begin.
Now I gotta tell this whole damn story all over again to him before the girls return.
