[glow=red,2,300]“With you I find/I can close my eyes/To the world surroundin’ me” —Mary J. Blige: If I Don’t Love You This Way[/glow] “You ready?”, Tariq asked with approving eyes while looking at Shalena. He had just arrived at her place so they could go out to the movies down in The Village. She was dressed in a pair of jeans, some red stiletto boots, and a red turtleneck sweater. And as usual, her hair was full of thick, curly ringlets which were hanging right above her shoulders. “Yeah, lemme grab my jacket and then we can be out.”, she smiled while admiring him as well. He was dressed in a brown leather jacket with a matching cap, a crème-colored sweater, some jeans, and a pair of dark brown Timbs. In her opinion, his ensemble brought out his chocolate-coated complexion even more than usual. When they walked hand-in-hand into the movie theatre’s lobby close to an hour later, they were noticed by DaShawn who was there with Maria. “What are you lookin’ at?”, Maria asked with a puzzled look while looking at the somewhat pissed off look on his face. “Nothin’!”, he snapped as he turned back around to look at her. “I know you’re not gettin’ loud with me?!”, she snapped back which caused several people in front of them in the ticket line to turn around and look in their direction. “Look…juss be quiet, yo.”, DaShawn warned in a whisper while taking another quick glance over his shoulder at Shalena and Tariq. He was hoping that they weren’t there to catch the same movie that he and Maria were there to see. However, several minutes later when he watched them walking inside the theatre still smiling up in each other’s faces and whatnot, DaShawn knew it was going to be a long evening; especially when Shalena’s eyes met his. She proceeded to smirk at him and roll her eyes as she and Tariq took their seats several rows down in front of him and Maria. “Oh, okay.”, he thought to himself with a nod of his head. He decided that he would keep a close watch on her. In the past when he took her out to a movie, he knew that she would always get up during the middle of it to use the restroom. So he’d just wait for her to get up so he could have a chance to speak with her. However, during the first half of the movie, DaShawn wasn’t able to concentrate on it because he was too busy watching Tariq paying more attention to Shalena instead of the screen. He had his arm around her shoulder and playfully fed her popcorn every now and then. And every few minutes, DaShawn noticed how they would share a quick kiss in between scenes. “I’ll be back in a minute. I gotta use the bathroom”, DaShawn whispered to Maria when he saw Shalena stand up several minutes later. Like he had predicted, she told Tariq that she was running to the restroom. “Oh, well can you get me another soda on your way back, please?”, Maria asked while never taking her eyes off of the screen. She was too busy watching a fight scene between Larenz Tate and Taye Diggs’ characters. “Yeah.”, DaShawn huffed with a roll of his eyes as he stepped across her feet. While standing in line at the concession stand, his eyes kept glancing over to the restroom area. He was more than anxious to see Shalena. Within three minutes, he noticed her walking out. He immediately stepped out of line and approached her although she didn’t see him headed her way.

“W’sup, Lena?”, he grinned after stepping in front of her.
She proceeded to roll her eyes and suck her teeth while trying to walk away. However, he made the mistake of grabbing a hold of her hand.
“Let me go, Shawn!”, she loudly warned. A teen-aged usher who was nearby glanced at them.
“Damn! I juss wanted to see how you were doin’!”, he angrily whispered while immediately letting go of her.
“What the hell do you care?! You need to be worryin’ about yo’ baby’s momma that you left inside! Don’t worry about me and my man since I know that’s what you’re tryna get at!”, she huffed as she began to walk away.
“Oh so that nigga in there IS your man?!”, DaShawn chuckled. “He doesn’t even look like your type!”
“So what’s my type supposed to be? A low-life thug wanna-be like your sorry ass?!”, she spat while looking him up and down. She admitted to herself that his cornrows and baggy clothing were the major factors that made her attracted to him in the first place, but now she despised everything about Dashawn’s persona.
“fcuk you, b!tch!”, he hissed while walking up on her. However, she didn’t back down like she had always done in the past when he became angry with her.
After glancing at his watch several times, Tariq decided to step out into the lobby to see why Shalena hadn’t come back inside after almost 15 minutes. He found out soon enough when he saw a tall, husky guy towering over her. It appeared that he and Shalena were in a heated argument from the look on both of their faces.
“Lena?! What’s wrong?”, Tariq asked after immediately coming to her rescue and taking her hand. He proceeded to shoot DaShawn an icy stare.
“Nothin’…it’s coo’. I’m aight.”, she sighed with relief. Although she put up a good front with DaShawn of showing that she wasn’t afraid of him, she had been hoping that someone would come to her aid.
“Well, I don’t think so. Who are you and why are you botherin’ my girl?!”, Tariq asked in a pissed off tone while continuing to stare DaShawn down.
“That’s none of your damn business!”, DaShawn snapped while glaring at Shalena.
“Nah, man! When it comes to her, I make it my damn business!!!”, Tariq growled as he let go of her hand to walk up to DaShawn.
“No, Tariq…it’s okay. But if you must know, this is Shawn.”, she quietly stated as she grabbed his hand to pull him away. She didn’t want an ever bigger scene to unfold since she saw several people, in passing, glance at them every now and then.
“This is that nigga?!!”, Tariq angrily shouted while pointing at DaShawn and looking at her.
“Yeah, but he’s not worth the bullsh!t. C’mon…let’s go.”, she replied as she continued to hold onto his hand to lead him back into the theatre.
“Nah, let’s juss be out!”, he huffed as he led her outside instead. It was obvious that he was pissed off with what he had just found out.
Meanwhile, DaShawn stood in the middle of the lobby watching them until they disappeared behind the doors. Needless to say, later on that night, he took out his frustrations on Maria. She had long replaced Shalena as his punching bag, once again.
On the way back to her place, Shalena noticed how quiet and reserved Tariq was. Every time she wanted to say something, she would change her mind because she didn’t want to add fuel to the fire since she assumed he was still upset with what had taken place earlier. So neither one said a word until they were in front of her door.
“Listen, I’m sorry for the way things turned out tonight.”, she whispered while staring into his eyes.
“It’s no big deal. I’m coo’.”, he stated with a nod of his head. However, the expression on his face told a different story. There was nothing more that he had wanted to do than to kick DaShawn’s ass for how he had treated the woman that he now loved in the past.
“Are you sure?”, she quietly asked as she stepped up closer to him.
“Yeah, Lena. I’m sure.”, he faintly smiled as he leaned forward and planted a soft kiss on her cheek. “I’ll call ya lata.”
“Wait! Ummm…I’d really like your company if you can stay for a while.”, she bashfully smiled when he turned back around to look at her. After the amount of time they had been spending together over the past several months, she felt like she was ready for more to take place between them. And that’s exactly what happened.
That night Tariq woke things up in her body and soul that she forgot existed when she was with DaShawn.
He began by putting on Kenny Lattimore’s CD, “Soul of a Man” after picking Shalena up in his arms and toting her into her bedroom. He then proceeded to take the time to tell her how beautiful she was as he touched and kissed every single part of her body that he undressed beginning with her feet. After completely undressing her, he proceeded to remove his own clothing before puling her into his arms to kiss her deeply as he began to make passionate love to her. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“W’sup, girlll!!! The night has finally arrived!”, Shalena exclaimed several weeks later when she and Tariq met up with Janette and Calvin at Janette’s place. They were on their way to Mary’s show.
Earlier in the day, Shalena wrote Mary a personal letter on some beautiful stationary that she bought from the neighborhood bookstore. In the letter, Shalena explained to Mary how her life had been touched through her music and how it was because of her that she had met a special person who was showing her what true love felt like after going through a few years of pain and abuse with her former lover. Shalena also bought a single red rose to give to Mary along with the letter. Her plans were to give it to her during her performance since she would be seated in the front row.
After arriving at The Garden, Tariq asked Shalena to come with him for a few minutes.
“Where we goin’?”, she asked with a puzzled look. She glanced back over her shoulder at Janette who was just as lost as she was. However, she noticed that Calvin had a sly grin on his face while watching Tariq.
“You’ll find out in a minute.”, Tariq grinned with a wink as he took a hold of her hand.
“Oh, aight.”, she replied as she began to hand her rose and letter to Janette to keep for her until she returned.
“It would be best if you brought that with you.”, Tariq stated.
It still hadn’t dawned on Shalena where they were headed although they had made their way backstage after Tariq obtained a pair of backstage passes for him and her.
“Tariq? You mind tellin’ me where we’re goin’?”, she asked with a chuckle. Just then, she was a little surprised when Calvin Richardson who would be opening Mary’s show greeted him. Tariq proceeded to introduce him to Shalena.
“Man! I didn’t know you knew him!”, she giggled as they continued to make their way down the long, dimly-lit hall lined with several dressing rooms.
“Yeah! I met him a while back when he was still workin’ on his CD. He’s as cool as they come.”, Tariq smiled while coming to a stop in front of one of the doors. Shalena noticed a large, muscular man standing in front of it. However, she didn’t say anything as Tariq greeted him with a pound and half-hug.
The big guy told Tariq that he would be right back before disappearing on the other side of the door. Several seconds later, he stepped back out and told her and Tariq that they could go in.
Upon entering the room, Shalena glanced around at several people that she didn’t notice right away as Tariq introduced them to her. However, when she saw LaTonya Blige, a big grin spread across her face along with a look of disbelief.
“Hol’ up! No I am NOT in who I think I am room!!!”, she excitedly thought to herself. But her eyes didn’t deceive her when she saw Mary turn around in her chair to stand up and greet them.
While watching Tariq walk over to Mary to share a big hug with her, Shalena stood frozen in disbelief as happy tears began to spill from her eyes. One of the many things she had dreamt about was becoming true right before her very eyes.
“This is my girl that I was tellin’ you about!”, he proudly grinned as he and Mary approached her.
“Hi, Shalena. It’s nice to meet you.”, Mary warmly smiled as she proceeded to shake Shalena’s hand.
“Thank you.”, Shalena managed to whisper while looking at her in total amazement. “This is for you.” She proceeded to hand Mary her gifts that she had picked up for her.
“Oh, thanks. This is very nice of you.”, Mary smiled once again as she reached out to give Shalena a small hug.
“You’re welcome.”, Shalena nervously giggled as she began to wipe her tears away with the tip of her fingernails. “I’m sorry…I’m so embarrassed! I always said that I would never be the type of fan to cry if I ever met you!”
“It’s coo’!”, Mary chuckled. “It lets me know that I’m doin’ my job the right way.”
“Thanks.”, Shalena smiled.
After a few more minutes of chatting with her, Shalena and Tariq headed back for their seats while he explained to her how he knew Mary. Before completely sitting down in her seat next to Janette, Shalena began to go on and on about how she had met Mary through him.
“Girl, how was she?!! Was she nice or the way the media says she’s always been as far as rude and shit?!”, Janette asked with widened eyes.
“Hell no! She’s nothin’ like that! She was so sweet and down to earth! She even gave me a hug!!! Fo’ real, that girl is like my guardian angel! But I was so crazy because I cried in front of her, but she said I was coo’!”, Shalena laughed after thinking about how she had carried on earlier.
Meanwhile, as Mary and LaTonya sat alone in her dressing room, she decided to read what Shalena had given to her. By the time she was finished, she had become a little misty-eyed as well as proud of how she had touched yet another fan’s life.
Several hours later when Mary hit the stage, Shalena jumped up screaming and applauding as if this was her very first time seeing her. And boy did she feel special when Mary grinned and waved at her and her crew. Even Janette became excited.
“Girl, she waved at me! She waved at me!”, Janette happily screamed while jumping up and down and holding onto Shalena’s arm. Shalena replied by laughing and hugging her as they both started jumping up and down.
Mary performed some of her biggest hits from “What’s the 411” up to “Love & Life” and several songs from soundtracks that she had been featured on in the past. However, Shalena couldn’t stop her flow of tears when Mary began to sing “Keep Your Head”. In her letter to Mary, she had also explained to her how that one song has always kept her going when she felt like giving up.
Tariq stood up and held her in his arms while they watched Mary sing it. Each time Mary arrived at the chorus, she would look in Shalena’s direction while singing the lyrics. And when Shalena was finally able to get herself together, she sang along with her.
Out of all of the Mary concerts she had been to in the past, this was by far going to be her most memorable one.
By the time Mary performed her last number that was “Everything” as a dedication to her fans before thanking everyone for coming out, for Shalena it was a happy ending to a very exciting night.
