"Happy New Year.", I whispered in Janae's ear as I held her from behind while we looked out at the fireworks exploding against Atlanta's skyline from the patio of her new home that I purchased for her. It's now 2000 and it's been almost two years since we met. During this time, she and I have now gotten beyond our physical attraction. I can talk about things with her that I can't talk about with Karima and vice versa.
Speaking of Karima, she gave birth to another son last year that we decided to name after her grandfather who took the place of her biological father. Sometimes I watch her get sad at the mere mention of her pops' name because she told me long before we were married how he broke her mother's heart. And here I am doing the same s.hit to her even though i don't mean to. But unless you've been in the situation, I guess someone on the outside looking in wouldn't understand where I'm coming from.
"I wish you didn't have to go back home tomorrow.", Janae sighed as she turned around to look at me.
"I know. I feel the same way. But I'll be back in a couple of weeks to see ya after I make some more business deals back home.", I lied while looking into her eyes. She still had no idea that I had been married for over five years now. I guess I was beginning to develop some feelings for her although I still hadn't told her yet. I felt like it would only make things more complicated.
"Well, I guess I'm gonna get ready for bed. I've had quite a night.", she sighed while tightly hugging my neck. After our embrace, she walked back inside and headed to her bedroom with me following behind her.
Once we were under the sheets, we made love before she fell asleep in my arms immediately afterwards. However, I had a hard time falling asleep while thinking about how Karima and the kids were doing back home. I hate that I lied to her by saying that I had to come check on things at the club even though I never had to worry about how it was coming along because my cousin, Chris, who was in charge of it was doing a banging job in raking in the profits. But anyway, what could I do when Janae said that she didn't want to spend the arrival of the new millennium alone? I guess I'll call Karima in the morning to let her know that I'll be home by tomorrow night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Several months later as Janae headed for her ride, she was still trying to think of the best way to let me know that she was going into her fifth month of pregnancy with my child. She found out that she was almost three months pregnant the last time I had been down to see her. But even then, she didn't know how to let me know about it.
"I guess I have to call and tell him as soon as I get home.", she sighed to herself as she climbed behind the wheel of her ride to leave her doctor's appointment.
Pulling out into the mid-morning traffic, Janae didn't notice the car that had ran a stop sign on her right until it was too late. The impact from the car plowing into her passenger side door caused her own car to spin around at least three times before coming to a stop after it jumped a curb. Because she was violently thrown around in her car although she was wearing her seatbelt, she blacked out for a few minutes when her head was knocked up against her window. A witness to the accident quickly called the police and paramedics. By the time both parties arrived, Janae was conscious, but out of it, while being asked questions to see how alert she was by both the cops and paramedics. She was quickly loaded onto a stretcher and rushed down to the hospital.
Several hours later because of the stress from the accident, she miscarried our child. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Happy birthday dear Nasirrrrrr...happy birthday to youuuuuuuuuu!!! Yay!!!!!!!!", all of our guests sang as Nasir, Jr. sat at one of our tables out back while hiding his face. He had celebrated his fourth birthday two days ago and Karima and I were throwing him a surprise party on this afternoon.
"Make a wish, sweetie!", Karima grinned as she knelt down next to his chair while everyone waited for him to blow out his candles. Each time I watch my baby grin, it takes me back to the first day that we met and I'm reminded of just how special she really is to me.
Some of my boys and I began to chuckle as we watched Nasir take a deep breath as he leaned forward towards his cake. But just when he was about to blow his four candles out, in a flash, our one-year-old son, Jacob appeared from behind Nasir's chair and blew out his candles instead. Everyone began to laugh.
"Ma! Make him stop!", Nasir shouted with a look of disappointment on his face.
"Jakey, get ova here, man!", Karima laughed as she pulled him into her arms. "You can't blow out your brother's candles. You have to wait until your birthday comes up. Okay?" She proceeded to place a soft kiss on his cheek while her moms relit the candles on the cake.
"Okay, Lil' Man...make your wish and blow 'em out!", I proudly grinned while standing across from him.
"Okay!", he smiled at me before taking another deep breath. This time he succeeded in blowing them out.
"Yayyyyyyyyyyy!!!", everyone cheered. I was about to help Karima and her moms serve the children some cake when I received a call on my phone.

"Hello?"
It was AZ who was vacationing down in Georgia for the weekend with his recent girl and some of her family who still live down there. "Hey, man. I got some news to tell ya that I just found out this mornin'.", he replied in a somewhat anxious tone.
"W'sup?", I whispered as I walked off to the side of the yard.
"It's about Janae. One of my girl's friends is a friend of Janae's and she was talkin' to my girl this mornin' on the phone when she mentioned that Jay had been in an accident yesterday. From what my girl was tellin' me, the accident sounds like it was pretty serious. She's in the hospital now."
"Damn! Listen, I'm on my way down there to see you. I'll holla at'cha lata.", I replied in an upset tone before ending our call. I quickly made my way back over to Karima and the boys.
"What's wrong?", she asked after recognizing the worried look on my face.
"I just got a call from A; he was sayin' that a surprise audit and inspection of the club is takin' place on Monday mornin' so I gotta go check on things with him and Chris so we'll be ready for it when the auditors show up. I'll be gone indefinitely.", I found myself lying while looking into Karima's eyes of disappointment.
"Ummm...ma, can you keep a watch on things for a few minutes?", she asked while turning to her moms.
"Yeah, hon."
"Nas, we need to talk.", Karima sighed after turning around to face me before angrily marching into the house. I quickly followed in behind her.
"What is it?", I huffed even though I knew what was about to be said.
"What the hell is goin' on with you?", she calmly asked while folding her arms and glaring at me. Anytime she cursed, I knew she was pissed.
"Riri, I don't like this goin' outta town on business any more than you do. But what can I do about the situation?", I replied with a shrug of my shoulders.
"This is about you just up and leavin' in the middle of our son's party! Why can't AZ help Chris handle that s.hit by himself?! If Chris couldn't do the job, then why the f.uck did you hire his ass?!", she snapped while on the verge of crying.
"Look, don't go pullin' that s.hit on me! You knew from the time we got togetha that I was a businessman. I can't help if I wanna keep a check on my s.hit! And no it's not fair to leave you and the babies home by yourselves most of the time, but what I'm doin' is for us. And you know that Riri.", I angrily huffed.
"You know what? Just take your ass on! Bye!", she huffed as she stomped past me to head back outside to the party.
"Riri...", I sighed as I began to follow her out, but then I just decided to go upstairs to pack a few things before calling the airline to book the next flight out to Atlanta so I could check on Janae.
"What's the matter, sweetie?", Karima's mother whispered when she reached her to help with putting Nasir's presents on the table.
"Take a wild guess.", she mumbled with a shake of her head.
"Another business trip?", she asked.
Karima sadly nodded her head before putting on a big smile for the sake of our children as she carried the presents over to where they were sitting along with the other children in attendance. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Several hours later when my flight landed, I headed to the Comfort Inn in my rental car. When I pulled into the parking lot, I called Karima up.
"Hello?", she answered while holding the phone between her ear and shoulder as she continued to paint her toes on the bed.
"Hey, Riri. I was juss callin' to let'chu know that I had a safe flight and I'm about to check into my room."
"Oh, okay. Which hotel are you stayin' in?", she emptily asked. I couldn't blame her for being a lil' pissed off with me though.
"The Comfort Inn. As soon as I get settled into my room I'll call you back. Bye, Riri."
"Aight, bye.", she replied before ending our call.
After I was given a key to my room, I quickly headed up to it in the elevator. Once I was inside, I went over to the phone and proceeded to forward whatever calls I would receive from Karima to my cell phone. That way I couldn't be traced to Janae's house where I would stay for the next several weeks until I knew she was well enough to be alone. When I was finished forwarding my calls, I heading back downstairs and over to the hospital. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "How are you, sweetie?", I anxiously asked once I had reached her hospital room later on in the evening. I noticed that her arm was in a sling and she had a bandage on her forehead.
"I'm fine. But a lil' sore.", she weakly smiled while I gently kissed her cheek. "I guess you heard from your boy about my accident, huh?"
"Yeah. Are you sure you're fine?", I asked as I took a hold of her hand.
"Yeah, I'm fine.", she lightly chuckled before taking a long pause. "No I'm not." She slowly lifted her eyes to look at me. I noticed that they were watering up.
"Let me go get the nurse.", I replied as I was about to let go of her hand.
"No, wait. I don't mean that I'm not fine as far as physical pain.", she whispered as a few tears slowly rolled down her cheeks.
"Talk to me, Janae. What's wrong?"
"I lost...our baby. I was tryna think of a way to tell you that I was pregnant, but I didn't know how you would take the news. But yesterday when I left my doctor's appointment, I had made up in my mind that I was gonna finally call and tell you that I was almost five months...", she stated in between light sobs. "...But then the impact from the accident caused me to lose it late last night. I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
For a moment, I was speechless as I looked at her hand wrapped in both of mine. While I should've been upset that she hadn't let me know that she was carrying my child until last night, I couldn't be. I let out a deep sigh before speaking as I used one of my hands to brush her tears away.
"I just realized how much I love you." I couldn't believe that I had finally confessed my feelings for her.
"I'm glad to hear you finally say it because I love you too.", she sighed as we gazed into each other's eyes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Karima, honey. You're not thinkin' rationally.", her moms calmly stated close to three weeks later. Karima had made up in her mind that she was going to file for a legal separation from me since I hadn't returned home yet. But my reason for not returning home was because I wanted to make sure that Janae was okay during the first two weeks of her therapy sessions due to her suffering from whiplash. However, I would be returning home on the next evening.
"I am so! I'm tired of goin' around in circles with Nas. As far as I'm concerned, he has another woman somewhere which is why he seems to be gone so much all of a sudden in the past two years!", Karima snapped while pouting and folding her arms as she turned away from her mother like she's always done when she wanted to have her way.
"You're jumpin' to conclusions. I see a hard-workin' man who only wants the best for his family when I look at him. But Riri, if you continue to act like this, you're only gonna push him farther and farther away until he finally ends up in another woman's embrace. Is that what you really want to happen?" Her mother proceeded to gently grab her by the shoulders so she could turn her around to look at her.
Karima began to shed silent tears as she slowly shook her head.
"C'mere, sweetie. Everything's gonna be okay.", her mother sighed while gently rubbing her back.
"It's juss that I don't know what to do anymore.", Karima sobbed while placing her head on her moms' shoulder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After making sure that Janae had taken her bedtime dose of her muscle relaxer medication, I laid down with her and held her in my arms until I was for sure that she was asleep. I quietly got up and went into the living room to talk to AZ since I had asked him to stay with Janae until she finished up her therapy session in another week. As for me, I would be returning home to Karima and the boys the next afternoon.
"You finally got her to go to sleep?", AZ asked from an armchair while keeping his eyes on the tv as he flipped through several channels.
"Yeah. Thanks again for agreein' to stay with her for a few more days. I would have done it myself, but I need to get back home to wifey and the kids.", I weakly chuckled as I flopped down across the sofa on my back. I proceeded to blankly stare up at the ceiling.
Over the next few minutes while I sought advice from AZ on what to do about my situation with both Karima and Janae, Janae had just walked into the hallway to get her a glass of water from the kitchen. However, after hearing that I had a wife and kids back home, she quickly walked back into the bedroom and climbed back in the bed.
When I returned to her room a half-hour later, I quietly climbed under the covers and pulled her into my arms and held her from behind as she continued to sleep, or so I thought. I leaned forward and placed a light kiss on her cheek. "I love you so much. I'll never do anything to hurt you even if it means continuin' to live a lie in order to be with you."
The moment Janae heard my words, a few tears fell from under her closed eyes as she kept on pretending to be asleep. This time around, I placed a light kiss on her ear before falling asleep with my chin placed on her shoulder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next morning after I kissed Janae goodbye at the front door so I could head to the airport, she glared at AZ sitting on the sofa watching tv. Then with a shake of her head and a roll of her eyes, she headed for the kitchen.
"Damn him for playin' me like this! Who the hell does he think he is?!", she angrily thought to herself about me after flopping down at the kitchen table and burying her face in her hands. But then she became angrier with herself when she realized that she still loved me in spite of finding out about my other life. A second or two later, AZ came into the kitchen to grab him another glass of juice.
"Yo, Jay. You aight?", he asked while heading for the fridge.
"Yeah.", she replied with a suck of her teeth.
He threw her a puzzled look before going on. "Aight. Oh yeah...it's about time for you to take your medicine, then we have to head downtown for your therapy after you eat some breakfast."
"Forget all that! What's this about Nas havin' a wife and kids back home?!", she snapped while glaring at him once again.
"I don't know what you're talkin' about.", he replied with an innocent and unknowing look. "Now what would you like me to fix you for breakfast so we can be out?"
"Don't try to change the subject! Answer my question!", she huffed while slamming her hand down on the table in a demanding fashion.
"You know that if you don't do like the doctor told you to do, then Nas is gonna be upset.", he sighed as he walked over to the table to look at her.
"Look...if you don't tell me the truth, then I won't eat OR go to therapy and Nas' ass will be mad with YOU and not me because you couldn't get me to do what I need to! Now talk, dammit!"
AZ took a deep, long sigh before answering her question as he took a seat at the table next to her. "Aight, it's like this, Jay...he's been married for close to six years now and has two sons."
"So why the hell did he even botha with my ass in the first place?!"
"Because he confided in me that he really loves you."
"Just how is it possible for him to LOVE me and his wife?!", she huffed with a shake of her head.
The only thing AZ could do was shake his head after lowering it. "I'ono, but he does." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Thanks for keepin' the boys for me, ma.", Karima smiled as she walked her and the boys over to her mother's ride. "It's no problem. Besides, you and Nas need to sit down and communicate with one another.", she smiled as they shared a quick goodbye hug. "Bye, mommy!", Jacob grinned once again while waving at Karima from his child seat in the back. "You already told her bye four times!", Nasir sighed with a shake of his head. "And you told Daddy bye five times!" "It's okay; you two can say it to me as many times as you want!", Karima giggled as she leaned inside the car to kiss the two of them on the forehead once again. When she walked into the house a few minutes later, I noticed how she didn't even glance at me while cutting through the den to head for the kitchen. I decided to get up from watching tv to go see what was up with her. When I reached the kitchen, I watched her loading the dishwasher. "Riri? You've hardly said two words to me since I been home. W'sup?" "Nothin'.", she huffed as she continued to straighten up the kitchen after turning the dishwasher on. "I don't believe you. Is it because I haven't been home in so long?", I asked as I walked up behind her to gently wrap my arms around her waist. I noticed how she tensed up the moment she felt my touch. Then without thinking twice about it, she shoved my arms down and away as she spun around to face me. "I want a straight answer, Nas. Is it someone else?" "What?" "Is it someone else?!" "No, never that! What would make you ask me some shit like this anyway?", I sighed while watching her search my eyes with hers. "Because, I can't think of any otha reason why you're always gone so much now even though you keep sayin' it's work!" "That's because it is!", I huffed out of frustration before placing my arms around her waist once again while pulling her close to me. "Listen, boo. I would neva lie or do anything to jeopardize our marriage because I love you and the boys too much. And as much as I hate bein' away from yall, I have to handle my business." "I know.", she quietly sighed while lowering her eyes as she rested her hands against my chest. "Hey, I got an idea.", I smirked while looking at her. "What?", she asked after quickly lifting her eyes back up to look at me. "We have this whooooooooooole house to ourselves so why don't we make the most of tonight?", I slyly grinned before lowering my lips down onto hers for a brief kiss. "Okay. I think that can be arranged.", she giggled. Close to an hour later after we took a shower together, my girl turned the tables on me which I had no complaints about since I had taught her well thanks to the bomb love-making sessions I always had with Janae. "Damn. What you been thinkin' about while I was gone?", I chuckled as Karima straddled me while tying my arms together above my head using a silk scarf. "If you really wanna know the truth, all I could think about was how long you've had me lackin'.", she winked before lying down on top of me while lowering her lips down onto mine as her hands roamed downward on my body until the warmth of her hand wrapping around me caused me to groan from satisfaction. While she handled me, she placed kisses all over my face, neck, throat, chest, and stomach. But just when I thought I was about to explode, she immediately stopped. "Riri, what the fuck you stoppin' for?!", I asked while trying to catch my breath as I glared down at her. "You're such a big baby.", she slyly grinned. And before I could say another word, her mouth replaced where her hand had been earlier. I felt my eyes rolling back in my head as my baby handled her shit like a pro. "Oh shit!", I loudly groaned as I felt her tongue and sucking motion quickly taking me close to the edge. And again her ass stopped on me! All I could do was lie still as she traced her tongue all the way back up to my lips before reaching above me to untie my hands. Then, without warning, I flipped her over onto her back and grabbed up to the back of her knees so I could finish getting mine. The only thing she could do was lie under me and bite her bottom lip while sinking her nails into my forearms. In no time flat, I found myself falling down onto her as our sweaty bodies stayed connected. "Welcome home.", she smiled after catching her breath while lightly running her nails up and down my back. "Yeah.", I wearily thought to myself since the only person I could think about at the moment was Janae since it had been a while since we had sex this great due to her accident.
