...Horace Brown?
Background Info:
b. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. The first signing to Motown Records under the 90s stewardship of Andre Harrell, southern soul singer Horace Brown had first been contracted to Harrell's Uptown Records. The son of a Baptist minister, he came to their attention in 1991 when DeVante Swing of Jodeci received a copy of Brown's demo tape from a friend. Significantly, Brown sang, played all the instruments and wrote the music on the cassette. The following year he was flown to Los Angeles to co-write and sing backing vocals for Christopher Williams' "All I See" single. Thereafter, Harrell, who was at the session, signed him to Uptown. He recorded an album for the label, but it was never released. In fact, the only product that emerged from his three years at the label was his 1994 debut single, "Taste Your Love". This peaked at number 56 in the Billboard R&B charts, but failed to secure any mainstream acclaim. Brown was frustrated at the label's concentration on platinum-selling artists such as Mary J. Blige and Jodeci, but was more than happy to move with Harrell to Motown in 1996. "I can't believe I've been given the chance to be a part of that history", he told Billboard magazine. His first recordings for the label were two singles, "One For The Money" and "Enjoy Yourself", which accompanied his self-titled debut album in 1996. The album included a duet with Faith Evans on " Doing Wrong", and "Tell Me", a collaboration with Sean "Puffy" Combs.
