“Come on in here, Big Momma!”, Stanley joked as I walked inside of the salon on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon along with Chastity, Gran’ma, Momma, and Shondra. He and the rest of the staff were throwing me a surprise maternity leave/baby shower party. I was going into my seventh month and my doctor had ordered me to stay off of my feet for the rest of my pregnancy so I wouldn’t be under any strain and stress which could put my baby in jeopardy.
Soon after Boris and I became married down at City Hall, he wanted to get right to work on giving Chastity a baby brother although we were told several weeks ago that I was having another girl. Either way, he was thrilled. However, I felt like he was going back to his old ways again as far as the staying out late and not paying me much attention to me although the only person I shared this information with was Tyrese. He and I were almost inseparable as far as being friends. When I couldn’t talk with Shondra or Gran’ma about certain things that I needed to know from a male’s point-of-view, I could always count on him. Some nights he and I talk on the phone until 3 and 4 in the morning when Boris finally decides to come in. Yeah, there’s not much of an excuse for him to be bringing his behind home this late, but I desperately wanted to trust him. After all, I was the one who agreed to marry to him.
Anyway, there’s a catch to my special friendship with Tyrese. Boris isn’t happy with the fact that we’re so close, and although Tyrese is basically playing the field, he jokes that at times, the females that he sees don‘t appreciate that he has a close female friend. However, we’re all maintaining in spite of our current situations.
“Stanley, I could kick you!”, I giggled while sharing a big hug with him. “I told you that I wasn’t expectin’ you to do nothin’ like this for me!”
He gave me the “yeah right” look before glancing over at Gran’ma. “Gran’momma Casey? Have you always had a problem with this child tellin’ big lies like the one she juss told me?”, he joked while hugging her next followed by Momma.
“I’d ratha not say!”, Gran’ma laughed with a shake of her head.
“Neither one of yall are right!”, I laughed back.
“Look, juss hursh and come sit down in your chair, Miss Thing.”, he chuckled as he helped me over to my station. After I was seated, he did the honors of wrapping a colorful cape around my shoulders and placing a tiara on top of my head. “You will be Queen for the next few hours, girlfriend!” Everyone began to clap and cheer while I put my head down out of embarrassment while laughing.
“Yall are so crazy!”, I grinned.
“Yeah, whateva! You juss stay put. C’mon, Lil’ G.”, he smiled as he took Chastity by the hand to help him out with the refreshments while Momma and Gran’ma sat down on either side of me.
“Should I tell her now, Ma?”, Momma asked Gran’ma with a sly grin.
“I don’t see why you shouldn’t.”
“What are you two birds chirpin’ about?”, I joked while looking back and forth between the two of them.
“Well, baby…”, Momma started as she reached over to hold one of my hands that had been resting on my swollen tummy. “…I’ve decided to move back home for a while so that I can help Momma out with you and the baby!”
“Momma?! For real?!”, I happily exclaimed while leaning over and wrapping one of my arms around her neck and planting a big kiss on her cheek.
“Yup! It’s time that I put my Gran’momma role into play!”, she chuckled with a nod of her head.
“But what about David?”, I asked. He and Momma had been shacking up for over 25 years. Please don’t ask me why this man had never thought to put a ring on her finger even though I know that Momma’s partly responsible since she never stressed the issue.
“Well, he and I haven’t been gettin’ along for sometime now. That ol’ foo’ is goin’ on 56 and still tryna be a Mack! I wanted to tell you the last time I came home for your wedding, but I thought he and I would be able to work things out… well so much for that!”, she huffed.
“I’m sorry to hear that, but you should’ve told me.”, I sighed.
“And ruin your special day? That wouldn’t have been fair to you.”, she replied with a shake of her head.
“No ma…what’s not fair is you bein’ unhappy and I not be there for you.”, I faintly smiled while squeezing her hand.
She proceeded to lean forward and look at Gran’ma. “Ma, I wanna thank you for raisin’ my baby to be the person that I see before me right now.”
“Our baby!”, Gran’ma laughed while correcting her.
“Stop!”, I blushed as I reached over and grabbed up to Gran’ma’s hand.
Over the next few hours, I had a great time with all of my friends and family as they showered me with attention and gifts galore.
When it was time for me to thank them all for what they had done, I couldn’t help from becoming a lil’ emotional. Oh let’s face it, because of my hormones being involved, I flat-out cried.
“And she’s always callin’ ME the Drama Queen, yall!”, Stanley laughed as he stood up to come hug me. Of course I couldn’t help from laughing as well as everybody else.
