Several days later after we returned to school, Charli and I were leaving our modern dance class when her phone started ringing.
“Damn, it’s Cass again,” she wearily sighed when his number showed up on her display.
“Charli, you know you my girl and all, but sooner or lata you’re gonna have to tell him about Juelz.”
“I know, but I haven’t quite found the right words to break it down to him yet.”
“Well, I hope you don’t wait until he reads about your weddin’ announcement in the paper,” I teased.
“Shut up,” she snapped although we both began to laugh.

“She still won’t answer,” Cassidy sighed as he and Mario took a much needed break from using the various pieces of equipment in the weightlifting room.
“I keep tellin’ you that what you have to tell her is betta if done face-to-face,” Mario replied while wrapping a towel around his shoulders that he had just finished using to wipe the sweat from his head.
“But how do I tell a girl that I’ve grown to like that I got my ex pregnant the last time I was home before I met her and that I want to work things out with my ex for the sake of our child?” Cassidy angrily huffed as he shook his head.
“You tell her the way your ass juss told me, that’s how.”
“That’s easier said than done because it’s not your ass havin’ to deal with this shit.”
“Not really,” Mario smirked before taking a sip of water from his sports bottle.
“Man, what the hell you talkin’ about?”
“Ever since I saw Kian this past weekend, I been wantin’ her ass in the worst way. But how do I tell her that when she’s seen me out with Kalia a couple of times already?”
“And don’t forget you been gettin’ it from Kalia on the regular now too,” Cassidy chuckled which caused Mario to chuckle as well.
“Yeah, but it’s so easy to get it from her even though I don’t or never will feel her the way I’m still feelin’ Kian. But the question is how do I let Kian know what’s up?”
“Take your own advice and tell her face-to-face,” Cassidy smirked.

“Hey, w’sup?” Charli smiled the moment she received another call which was from Juelz this time as she and I continued to walk across the large campus to go grab a bite to eat at a nearby diner where most of the students hung out in between classes.
“W’sup, boo,” he smiled back. “Listen I know this is short notice, but is it okay if Jontez spends this weekend at my place so I can spend some time with him?”
“Ummm…yeah…sure,” she grinned although she was a bit unsure about it only because she knew Jontez had never been away from her mother.
“You sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” she replied with a nod of her head. “I need to make sure it’s coo’ with Ma though since I don’t know if she has made plans for him and her this weekend. But as soon as I get an answer, I’ll be sure to call you back.”
“Aight, coo’ and thanks. Yo, by the way, if you and your girls want to, yall can come up this way too to hang out with me and my boys.”
“We’ll think about it,” she faintly smiled.
“Aight, so I’ll listen out for your call lata on. Bye.”
“Bye.”
“From the sound of your voice, I assume that was your baby daddy,” I teased while cutting my eyes at her.
“Yes it was,” she giggled. “But anyway, I gotta remember to call Ma when she gets home from work because he wants to keep the baby this weekend up at his place. Oh yeah, he also said that we could come up and hang out with him and his friends if we want.”
“I think I’ll pass,” I quietly replied. I proceeded to look straight ahead as we continued to walk.
“Why? You know Thugsy’s gonna be there. You two can possibly work out your differences.”
I shook my head before giving her a quick sideways glance. “Nah, because if I see him it’s only gonna make me miss him more than I already do; that’s why I haven’t taken anymore of his calls. I gotta stay focused on what’s most important to me right now which is finishin’ school and followin’ my dreams. I’m scared that if I talk to Thugsy anymore between now and graduation, I’ll give in to what he wants me to do and go stay with him because I love him that much and want to please him. That alone is a scary-ass thing for me to deal with. So the best way for me to handle this is to not communicate with him for a while.”

No sooner than Cassidy and Mario arrived at the same diner that Charli and I were heading to, he was approached by Kalia who spotted him from the table where she and three of her other popular friends were sitting.
“Hey, Mario,” she grinned while reaching out and taking his hand. In the meantime, Cassidy went to find him and Mario a table.
“’Sup, Lia,” he emptily stated while rolling his eyes.
“So is there any reason why we didn’t hook up last night like you promised? I know I called your phone at least three times without an answer.”
“I was wiped out after rehearsals and I didn’t even hear my phone ring once,” he lied. Just then, he happened to glance up and saw Charli and me walking inside. When Kalia noticed him watching us, she loudly cleared her throat while throwing his hand down.
“Excuse me, but I’m right here,” she snapped while waving her hand close to his face.
“Look, not right now. We’ll have to talk lata,” he huffed as he walked away leaving her where she was standing.
In the meantime, Charli and I had made our way over to a table which happened to be directly behind the one that Cassidy was seated at. However, we didn’t notice him right away because his head was downward as he wrapped up a call on his phone with someone.
“Yo, man…your girl’s here,” Mario whispered to him with a head nod in our direction as he sat down directly across from him.
“Who?” he asked although he was already turning around in his seat. As soon as he and Charli made eye contact they both faintly smiled at each other.
I gave her an odd look before turning in my seat to see what she was smiling at. I found out when I was face-to-face with Cassidy. He and I proceeded to speak to one another and then I noticed Mario sitting across from him. He and I gave each other a quick smile. As I was turning back around in my chair, Cassidy tapped me on my shoulder.
“Yes?“ I asked after turning back around.
“Listen, would you mind tradin’ seats with me?” he smiled. “I need to talk to your girl for a lil’ while.” He then laid and kept his eyes on Charli who became a bit uneasy and fidgety in her chair.
Slowly turning back around in my seat, I looked at her while smiling. However, before she had time to say anything, I stood up and told him that I didn’t mind while throwing her a wink. The look she gave me forewarned me that she was gonna get my ass later for the stunt I had just pulled.
“Thanks,” he grinned as he stood up and took my seat while I took his.
“W’sup?” Mario smiled as I sat down across from him.
“Nothin’ much,” I smiled back.
“I’ve been tryna call you for the past few days,” Cassidy said as he and Charli skimmed over their menus.
“I know, but I’ve been kinda busy. Sorry,” she nervously chuckled.
“Well this was definitely good timin’ then because I have somethin’ really important I need to tell you.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. You know I went home this past weekend right?”
Charli nodded her head in response.
Just then, their waitress came over to take their orders.
“So did you and your girls have fun the otha night?” Mario slyly grinned while thinking back to when he and I ran into each other at the convenient mart.
“You could say that,” I smirked as I continued to scan over my menu. “What about you and Miss Kalia?”
I noticed the sheepish look that came over his face before he placed his arms on the table. “We had an aight time I guess.”
“Okay, so back to what I was sayin’ earlier,” Cassidy started after he and Charli had told their waitress what they wanted. “I went home this past weekend and found out some news that’s only fair to let’chu know about.”
“Oh yeah? What kinda news?”
“Well, I ran into my ex and she informed me…that…she’s carryin’ my baby. The next to the last time when I went home for the weekend, before meetin’ you of course, she and I got togetha after one thing led to another and that’s when it happened. But anyway, after she told me about the baby, she and I decided that we’re gonna try to work things out for our child’s sake. I’m sorry.”
Charli sat motionless for a few seconds as she watched him before clearing her throat. “It’s…it’s it’s okay,” she replied with a shake of her head before going on. “I’m glad that you’ve shared this with me because there’s a real reason why I’ve been avoiding your calls; there’s something I need to tell you about myself as well.”
This time it was Cassidy’s turn to nod his head in silence.
She took a deep sigh before speaking. “First of all, my little brother that I had been tellin’ you about is really my son. But the reason why I told you otherwise was because we were still in the early stages of gettin’ to know one another and I guess I was waitin’ around to see which way things were gonna turn out for us because I know how most guys feel about kids. Anyway, I ran into my son’s father this past weekend and we’re workin’ on some past issues we were dealin’ with and I was tryna figure out the best way to tell you. So I need to say that I’m sorry too.”
Afterwards, she and Cassidy sat staring at each other for a few seconds before they both burst out laughing.
“Wow, this is some crazy shit how we’re both dealin’ with the same situations,” he chuckled with a shake of his head.
“I know right,” she chuckled while relaxing in her seat. She proceeded to tuck some of her hair behind her ear.
“But I hope it doesn’t change anything between us as far as our friendship goes because you’re a pretty coo’ female and I enjoy talkin’ with you,” he smiled with a nod of his head.
“Thanks,” she blushed. “Same here.”
Meanwhile, Mario and I were continuing with our small talk about his rehearsals and my students in dance class when his face took on a serious look.
“Can I tell you somethin’?” he asked.
I shrugged my shoulders. “Sure. W’sup?”
I noticed how he bashfully smiled while lowering his head before quickly lifting it back up while reaching his hands across the table to take mine. Never breaking his eye contact with me, he began to talk.
“Listen, I know that I’ve been pretty busy lately with school, my job, and rehearsals but I haven’t been able to stop thinkin’ about you; especially when we ran into each other a couple of nights ago.”
While I smirked at him before chuckling as I thought that maybe he was saying this because he had never seen me dressed like I was that night, I became shocked when he began to chuckle before going on.
“I know you thinkin’ it was because of how you were dressed, but that’s not it although you were lookin’ fine as hell; but you do now too and all the other times we‘ve ran into each other,” he winked before laying his killer grin on me.
“Oh really?” I grinned back.
“Yeah, so look…I wanna know what could be up between us; seriously?”
“Wow,” I blushed while lowering my eyes to his large hands still firmly but gently wrapped around mine on the table. “I don’t know what to say besides I’m flattered.”
I felt him lifting my hands with his until both of our elbows were resting on the table as he interlocked his fingers with mine.
“Say that you and I will only see each other from now on,” he quietly stated as we gazed into each other‘s eyes.
My mind quickly went back to Thugsy for a brief moment and I became as confused as George W. Bush giving one of his State of the Union addresses. However, because I still have feelings for Mario, I found myself telling him to give me some time to think about it.
“Aight, that’s coo’ since I did spring this on you all of a sudden, but don’t keep me waitin’ too long,” he grinned.
“I won’t,” I smiled as the butterflies really began to flutter like crazy in my stomach.

“Here, this came for you,” Mian stated as soon as I walked in the house later on that night after leaving the dance studio. She proceeded to hand me a small white envelope with no return address on it.
“What’s this?” I mumbled as I walked over to the sofa to sit down. She came and sat down next to me.
“Open it and see,” she chuckled as she grabbed up to my arm.
“I will if you give me some room. Damn,” I smirked as I began to tear the envelope open. Several seconds later, my look of amusement changed into a look of pure rage when I realized it was an invitation to Daddy and Melanie’s engagement party! The lowlife dog even had a wallet-sized picture of the two of them enclosed with it.
“Is this muthaphucka for real?” I huffed as I cut my eyes over at Mian. “Does he really think that I’m gonna show up to THIS shit?!”
“Kian, please. I know the man’s not perfect, but if Mommy is a big enough person to attend then why can’t you?”
“Mommy’s what?! Is she outta her damn mind?!” I quickly jumped up to grab the phone from the bookcase so I could call her. However, Mian stopped me from doing so.
“Calm down, girl, damn!” she spat while snatching the phone from me. “Mommy already called earlier tonight and explained that she and a new FRIEND of hers have already been out to dinner with Daddy and Melanie and are gettin’ along well. So if MOMMY can move on, then so can you.”
“Whaaaaaaaat? Mommy’s got a friend? How come she’s juss now sayin’ somethin’ about him?” I asked in surprise forgetting all about Daddy.
“Actually, she’s been seein’ her friend for a while now but she didn’t know how you would react since we all know how you feel about Daddy and his soon-to-be-wife.”
All of a sudden, I felt like the dumbest dummy on earth. “Well, Mommy knows I’m all for her because she was the one who got hurt in the first place; hell, she been deserved some happiness of her own.”
“Yeah, but still we know how rude your ass can be about things,” Mian chuckled.
“Shut up,” I smirked before we both started laughing. “C’mon, let’s go pay her a quick visit since it’s still early.”
“Okay, lemme get my jacket,” Mian grinned as she went down the hall to her room.

When Mian and I arrived at Mommy’s house close to twenty minutes later, we were both in for a shock when she came to the door.
“Is this our momma?” I gasped as Mian and I stared at her. Mommy had on just the right amount of makeup like she used to wear years ago, she was dressed in a black and red sweater, a pair of jeans that complimented her full hips nicely, and a pair of red stiletto ankle boots. But the biggest shock of all was that she had cut off nearly every inch of hair that once hung halfway down her back. Now it was cut exactly the same as mine except her curls were spiky while I chose to wear mine in a soft layered style now.
“What are my babies doin’ here?” Mommy grinned as she pulled us both into a big hug.
“Well, we were comin’ to hang out with you for a while to talk but it looks like you’re about to go out,” Mian chuckled as we followed her inside the den.
“Ummm…yeah, actually...,” she started before throwing an anxious look my way, “…I’m waitin’ for one of my friends to pick me up. We’re gonna catch that new movie with the Rock.”
“Mommy, it’s okay…Mian explained everything to me earlier and I couldn’t be more happy for you,” I grinned as I reached over to hug her.
“Now, is this my baby?” she grinned back as we stepped out of our embrace. She proceeded to place her hands on either side of my face.
“Yes,” I smirked as I rolled my eyes. Then I took her hand and led her over to the sofa so she could sit down in between me and Mian. “Now tell us all about this FRIEND that you’ve been seein’.”
Over the next few minutes, she told us that his name was Donovan Jensen and that he was a loan officer at a bank downtown and did landscaping work on the side. She also said that he had never been married or had children, but he did own two houses: one here in Baltimore that he lives in and a summer home down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
We were about to ask even more questions about him until we were interrupted by her doorbell.
“Okay you two, that’s him. Be on your BEST behavior,” she joked while turning to point at me when she placed emphasis on best.
“Anyway, go on and open the door,” I laughed while dismissing her with a wave of my hand.
A second or two later, Mommy followed Donovan into the den while wearing a big smile. “Donovan, these are my daughters, Miandra and Kiandra. Girls, this is Donovan.”
Mian and I proceeded to stand up to shake hands with him. However, we were quite impressed when he kissed the back of our hands instead.
“Ladies, it’s my pleasure. Your mother has told me a lot of wonderful things about you two.”
“Thanks,” we both grinned at the same time.
“She’s told us some nice things about you as well,” Mian smiled while I nodded my head in agreement with her.
“C’mon, sis, let’s be out so we don’t hold them up,” I grinned while taking her hand and leading her over to Mommy so we could hug her goodbye.
However, when it was my turn I had to whisper how fine Donovan was in her ear. Shoot, Denzel couldn’t hold a candle next to this man!
